Pros

I just handed in my notice to Fastenal last Friday on good terms. I was immediately discharged according to company policy, I knew it would happen, so no hard feeling there. I was however informed today that Fastenal is not obligated to pay the two weeks severance salary, even though I offered to work out the remainder. What lead me to hand in my notice. From the start I felt I had been dupped. They way the commission structure was sold to me sounds lucrative. As part of the negotiation I was promised a raise at 30 days. That did not happen as my position was changed from inside sales to outside. I asked to be correctly compensated for that. More excuses and probationary time added. After six months I decided to stop waiting. I had been sold on working for Fastenal by a salesmen, who had only his better interest in mind. Fastenal sells their wages as being competitive, it is competitive compared to retail work. Emphasis is placed on margin and store profitably, which is understandable. It is a great way to learn the inner workings of how a business is run. The work culture needs attention (Sacramento area) you are expected to keep your time card 100% legit on paper, realistically you had to falsify your times and work without Lunch breaks are the norm. If you are in your early twenties, with no family to support, a willingness to hustle everyone on your way to lower mid management , won't take no for an answer, are ok with being mislead regarding your livelihood, eager to drink the cool-aid and are willing to invest ten years to make an honest wage. I encourage you to apply.

Cons

Deceiving pay structure, non competitive insurance plans, disposable employment to name a few

Pros

Great company culture, love the investment they put in for career advancement. Great people to work with, CEO is amazing but he's stepping down this month. Benefits are good. Decentralized organization so your ideas and solutions actually get listened to and implemented. Feel like I'm actually making a difference in the company.

Cons

Pay is lower than the industry average for most departments and they don't keep up with the cost of living, don't do bonuses (unless you're in sales) or pay raises. You have to ask to get one and most times they say no. Very male dominant at the branches and in sales, but many women in corporate leadership. Don't have any DEI initiatives. Not flexible on relocation for internal management roles, have to be at corporate HQ in Winona, MN.
