Hopeful but sometimes disillusioned with the path I'm on. - Co-Manager Kroger Employee Review

Pros

In this large a company, many opportunities exist for possible promotions. For someone willing to relocate, this is even more true. Its exciting to hear from upper management when they talk about where they started in the company and realize that, at some point, these avenues might be opened up for the next generation of managers.

Cons

Kroger works with a keen eye toward filling quotas. If you're not a minority, you slip to the bottom of the list for advancement in many cases. It seems to be more a matter of "replace a minority with a minority" (race, sex or both) to maintain the all-important quota. Secondly, the work-life balance program is great on paper, not so much if you work in the stores. Days off, holiday comp-days and vacations are continuously eliminated or postponed. The job is described as a 50 hour week (5 10 hour days) but often becomes 55 or 60 hours with no one taking notice.

Pros

• Generally work with fantastic people. • Work is not difficult, and time flies when busy. • My bosses collaborated with me to create a schedule that worked, as I often had other commitments. • Overall, a pleasant work experience most days. Get good at what you do and you'll do fine.

Cons

• Some of the senior management was less friendly than others - as to be expected. • Days were very volatile; some could be extremely easy, and others could be a nightmare. • Scheduling was kept rather limited; although I was able to get the hours I wanted, often times management would look to cut hours from departments whenever possible, leaving less support.
