Pros

You get to build good relationships with residents and coworkers. Some onsite teams genuinely care and work hard despite the conditions.

Cons

MAA pays significantly below the market rate for leasing roles in the Austin area. For the amount of responsibility, workload, and emotional labor that the position requires, the compensation simply does not match. Many competitors offer better base pay, stronger bonuses, and more supportive structures. MAA feels years behind the rest of the industry. Leasing consultants are often expected to do tours in unsafe conditions—late in the evening, when it’s dark, or when there are clear security concerns. Even when voicing discomfort or concerns, management pushes you to continue because “it’s part of the job.” Instead of addressing the core issues, MAA cycles through managers and puts more strain on the staff left behind. Corporate pushes numbers and performance metrics without providing adequate support, staffing, or resources. This leaves onsite teams overwhelmed and burnt out.
