Pros

It really depends on what your store is because I have heard mixed things. The leadership at my store was very great to work with. They always made sure that the animals were cared for properly. My leaders were really supportive, and let me do my job without any issues.

Cons

The company itself needs a whole rework from the top down. Corporate as a whole makes absolutely no sense to me. My store was one of the best performing ones in the district and we had three people working the store at any given time. There was always one cashier, one pet care, and one manager. Most of the times managers and cashiers overlapped, but pet care almost never did. Corporate never gave our store enough labor hours so pet care was always running around trying to do everything with no time to do it. The job is so so stressful and I wouldn't recommend it unless you're seriously looking for a career working with animals. Pet care is really a job you SHOULD have experience with, but PetSmart has such high turnover it's hard for them to retain the talented people since there's no growth besides becoming a manager that doesn't really care for the pets. There just really needs to be some reworking within corporate PetSmart.

Pros

The company pushes for more and more from the bottom level employees without better pay. I worked there before the restructuring and; not much can make me cry, but working here sure did, even back then. I can’t imagine how anxiety inducing it must be to work there now. Animal welfare is a complete non-concern. The only thing that’s pushed is sell, sell, sell. It’s borderline dystopian. Bad management seems to be a common issue, not only from my experience, but many others’ as well. I worked until I was an exhausted sweaty mess to make sure everything in pet care or, when I groomed, the salon, was cleaned to perfection as expected of me (and I reiterate: “me,” because these standards were not expected of my co-workers, just me) and overall felt very unseen. The only times I did feel “seen,” was when mistakes were made. Work was treated like boot camp. A co-worker that was subtley targeting/bullying me, and even started rumors accusing me of racist remarks(!!!), was promoted and anything I reported was downplayed because they were friends with the assistant manager. Working here was an overall traumatizing experience.

Cons

Employees are expected to be work-robots
