This job pays the bills at least. - Merchandising Leader PetSmart Employee Review

Pros

The pros to this job include working with great people, (when you actually get a team to work with). The pay is ok, but once you "cap out," you can't go higher. Weekly paychecks are a plus and you also learn new skills. (E.G. I learned how to drive / operate a forklift, and I got pretty good at it!)

Cons

Cons to this job, unfortunately, outweigh the pros. First off, the schedule DOES NOT BUDGE in this position! Your schedule is 6am - 2pm on the days you work period. There is NO flexibility. For this reason, it is difficult finding childcare as no childcare facility opens before 6am for dropoffs and they are closed on the weekends. This job requires you to work at least one day out of the weekend, adding to the problem of finding childcare. Secondly, the amount of work you are required to do in a day is just outrageous for one person. For example, when you have a truck come that day, you are required to put everything away, (often working by yourself), PLUS make sure pricing is correct, product is not out of date, merch is set correctly, drive aisle is filled and all product is present, (no empty holes on the shelf). This can be very difficult when your truckloads are big. Overall, this job is very taxing, physically and mentally, for as little as they pay you. They are definitely NOT single mom friendly!

Pros

The company pushes for more and more from the bottom level employees without better pay. I worked there before the restructuring and; not much can make me cry, but working here sure did, even back then. I can’t imagine how anxiety inducing it must be to work there now. Animal welfare is a complete non-concern. The only thing that’s pushed is sell, sell, sell. It’s borderline dystopian. Bad management seems to be a common issue, not only from my experience, but many others’ as well. I worked until I was an exhausted sweaty mess to make sure everything in pet care or, when I groomed, the salon, was cleaned to perfection as expected of me (and I reiterate: “me,” because these standards were not expected of my co-workers, just me) and overall felt very unseen. The only times I did feel “seen,” was when mistakes were made. Work was treated like boot camp. A co-worker that was subtley targeting/bullying me, and even started rumors accusing me of racist remarks(!!!), was promoted and anything I reported was downplayed because they were friends with the assistant manager. Working here was an overall traumatizing experience.

Cons

Employees are expected to be work-robots
