Pros

I admire the focus on making sure the customer is considered in every decision that's made, they really do live by that. It's pretty laid back. Nothing about my job is overly stressful or hectic. The people are great (with the exception of a few). The company itself cares about you as a person and your well being.

Cons

The word "engineer" gets tossed around in such a way that it makes you realize no one is either capable or willing to make decisions about trivial issues without an "engineer" involved. It really degrades the whole purpose of being one. In relation to this previous point, an engineer at Spire/Alagasco does very little technical. Check fittings on install drawings and size regulators. Any tasks assigned as you gain seniority does not seem to become any more interesting or challenging. All in all, the "engineering" done at Spire is, in all honesty, unfulfilling. The company also seems to have an inability to deal with people who consistently hinder work flows and slow projects to a halt. Bottom line, if you're an engineer who wants to have technical challenges and intriguing opportunities, this is not the place for you. If you're happy just showing up, working no more than 40 hours, and collecting a stress free paycheck on your path to retirement, this is your Mecca.

Pros

At the time, there was a good company culture. My understanding is that this went downhill after the new leadership and layoffs. Felt that they were trying to help the community they served. Benefits were pretty good.

Cons

Salaries didn't keep up with inflation, and there was too much focus on market acquistions over employee retention.
