USAA is a decent stepping stone, but is not a place for an extended career - Software/Systems Engineer I USAA Employee Review

Pros

USAA has great time off accrual rates. All time off (personal leave and sick days) come from one pool of hours and you start off accruing about 5 hours per paycheck. This, on top of the 6 company wide holidays, the 3 free "flex" holidays, and 4 floating holidays make for a lot of potential time off. Even with-in the IT department, I am able to take off when I need to.

Cons

The ability to grow your own career at USAA is very difficult - especially within IT. USAA does not appreciate education, so regardless of much you got out of an advanced degree or training, your base pay is not affected - nor are opportunities for advancement. Many times an employee will have to leave USAA, gain the experience in the new career path they want and come back into USAA through an external hirer position.

Pros

Life work balance, great benefit package and nice colleagues. The goal of the company is providing the best service to its members. So, they treat employees the best to encourage them to do the same for members.

Cons

Slow IT support, limited interactions with industry. Banking business is not as mature as insurance.
