Pros

Competitive benefits, opportunities for travel for team bonding, great collaboration and culture when in large groups, great project opportunities with the guaranteed success of a large company

Cons

In smaller group settings, there’s a ton of gossip and mean spirited discussion. The culture behind close doors is very toxic. I’ve never been in a company where people arnt friends with at least a few colleagues. People will not hesitate to throw someone under the bus and do so directly to leadership. I’ve seen small inconsequential mistakes become huge talking points against individuals and travel through different departments. Rare that someone will stick up for a colleague when this happens but instead will use the moment to cover their own mistake. Managers don’t seem to understand how to guide and empower employees - yet will micromanage. There’s a lot of “I don’t know what your should be doing but you need to do it right now” from managers. Then a lot of “why did you do that?!” in response. Leads to cross functional budget and planning disasters. And again, leads to people throwing others under the bus. The culture discourages small talk. I’m certain that my direct manager doesn’t know a single personal thing about me - not the pets I have, if I have a partner, the city I live in, not a single hobby … and I’ve been at this company for 3 years now under the same direct manager.

Pros

You can make good money here.

Cons

In sales, job can change often. For example: I was making good money and excelling because I am a relationship Sales person. Then they changed it to where you get the sale, and instead of being able to grow that account via that relationship you just broke into, you have to pass it to an account manager and go back to cold/robo calling. You "book" of business you recive to prospect from is a lottery. I received a book of prospects/accounts that most of the were low income, or senior living properties. They don't have a budget and have a line of renter on a waitlist. No way to convince them to spend money on advertising but you still have the same quota.

Thank you for sharing such a detailed perspective. We understand that frequent changes to roles, account ownership and business priorities can have a real impact on relationship-building and the day-to-day experience in sales. We’re glad to hear compensation was a positive part of your time at Zillow, and we appreciate you being candid about where the model and structure felt frustrating. Feedback like yours helps us better understand how these changes are experienced across teams as the business evolves.
