Lacking Leadership, Function1 Fails

Pros

Function1's leadership has expertise in creating a false image of wealth, professionalism, community, & expertise. In most organization's the top leadership is the definition of the company: its values, its positivity, and its guiding force. This is NOT the case for this organization. Program directors have worked tirelessly to make up for the lack of leadership and positive growth from the top. They work with their staff to retain an environment of positivity while this direction is lacking from the leadership. Function1 is only functional because of the interpersonal skills, business knowledge, and drive of the employees and directors who are dedicated but often left in the dark about company decisions, financial status, strategy, vision, and mission. When the leadership provides company "transparency" through town hall meetings and other rare 1-on-1 discussions, it is only to give employees bad news (mass layoffs, or option to go to contract or get laid off)

Cons

Function1's leadership has the expertise in creating a false image of wealth, professionalism, community, & expertise. Examples below: Wealth: - traveling the world WHILE the organization lays off over 20% and loses an additional 15% in the months after - Spending more money than is available in the company reserves just to meet the public and company image of wealth - Removing employee contributions to 401k from paycheck but not paying to account till months after (as opposed to the legal 7 day limit required by Dept of Labor Law). Interest for late payments and employer match not being provided Professionalism: - Letting personal feelings change judgement of how to understand, work with, and respect other staff regardless of the actual facts of a situation - Continuous overuse words including "like, you know, whatever" and replaces 'layoff' with "fired, separated, let go" - Not guaranteeing that staff given the option of becoming contractor will be paid on time or paid at all (other contractors were not paid for months last year!) Community: - Creating a false sense of positivity through false reviews to boost employee rating - Favored staff, regardless of role are given the opportunity for growth and job security but hard working staff are not - refusing to file for minority owned small business status for federal contracts, although suggested by multiple staff across company, due to pride, but struggling to win federal contracts and subsequently pay bills due to lack of project payout - creating a false sense of 'review cycles' and instead laying off staff who were promised possible salary increases - Sending anniversary memos and cards to staff less than 1 month before a layoff - Not being in the office (paid time off) during a layoff, or during a town hall giving the option for staff to stay as contractor or leave the company - Not providing past staff with options for future jobs, company connections. A defunct email address of a recruiter was provided. Helpful!!

Thank you for your time in providing such detailed feedback and we are sorry that you are left with a negative view of the company and its leadership. We hope that you took advantage of our anonymous feedback tool to express dissatisfaction and offer suggestions to leadership if it was available during your time here. If it was not available we hope you understand that we now offer this to our employees and that we take learning from our past mistakes, growing and moving forward very seriously. It is unfortunate that our attempts at being more transparent have resulted in sharing some not so pleasant information. However, feedback from current and past employees has emphasized the need for transparency so we have made it a priority and are not always able to provide good news. Of course, we are hopeful that as we continue to fix challenges we've encountered over the last year we will be able to share more positive information in the future. The trips and other travel arrangements you mention were planned and paid for far in advance and prior to knowing of any troubles ahead. We have reassessed our need for better financial planning and project forecasting to build up our reserves, but it will take some time for significant results to be seen. For clarification, Function1 does in fact have minority owned business status. Additionally, we are going through the process of 8a certification so that we will be able to bid for federal contracts. Thank you for your concern regarding these matters and if these were suggestions you made during your time of employment. We never intend for layoffs to happen but unfortunately they have to occur after all other possibilities have been exhausted. As such, we have to move forward regardless of whether all staff are present or some are out of office due to previously planned time off. All information provided at the time of layoffs was current and has been updated for any additional employee exits. We apologize if you have recently tried to get in touch with a contact that we provided several months ago and they are no longer available. However, we are confident that the contact's company can provide you assistance via another employee. We have extracted a great deal from our mistakes and experiences over the last year and we strive to make Function1 a better place for our current and future employees. We sincerely wish you the best in moving forward.

Pros

Few and far between. Frankly I can't think of any legit ones. I guess cool swag like squishy pandas and stale m&ms should count for something ?

Cons

Actually, empty bank accounts is true for our amazing company and our own bank statements. Paychecks have been late theoughout the year. Expenses are not repaid. Illegal money laundering or employee 401k contributions - removed from paycheck not deposited to account, not gaining interest. Staff, sales managers, PMs, consultants are doing their jobs well but the CEO and operations lead are pointing fingers and laying off or firing others although they are the ones that need to be fired. No raises but you know CEO makes bank. His vacations to Hawaii, europe, & so on are probably fun but we can't afford to do that if we don't get paychecks or worse for those who got laid off or fired. Oh. No raise yet and I been here a few years - certainly no bonuses No positive future. Everyone I work with is scared for future as project future uncertainty continues and CEO/ops continues to pretend everything is excellent - sure your company is doing excellent when everyone is Lookin for a job and (barely) getting paid for it.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. It has certainly been a very difficult year for everyone at Function1. While we agree that we should have communicated these challenges with more transparency, we did what was necessary to remedy the situation - which unfortunately included restructuring. We understand that this approach was painful for everyone involved, but we needed to take these measures to best secure the future of the company. We ultimately have learned many important lessons in the process and have since implemented policies to increase transparency and prevent these difficulties from ever happening again. As a current employee, we encourage you to have a conversation with your manager if you have any remaining concerns, or to take advantage of our anonymous feedback tool.

Pros

A friendly atmosphere when the team gets together. Very effective and proficient subject matter experts for web experience and Splunk. A bright team eager to grow and learn together. Accommodations for remote work.

Cons

Disappointing transparency and insight into the company direction and goals. Employee growth is expected and touted yet not adequately allocated for with full-time engagement expected for client projects. It is unclear where the company direction is coming from when senior consultants and principals are surprised by decisions and new company initiatives. Morale is low and many coworkers have expressed confusion as to what is happening at management tier, after a round of layoffs company wide chatter is nearly nonexistent.
