I worked at GCI full-time (Less than a year)
Pros
-Great benefits
- Good pay
- Great co-workers
-Lots of free food and discounts/prizes
Cons
-Lack of communication between departments
-Policies seem to constantly change daily/weekly on a trial (“Let’s see if this works or not”) basis, and when it doesn’t work, hard for employees to recover from the aftermath
Advice to Management
Better communication between departments, and better testing for systems and customer plans before launching.

I have been working at GCI full-time (More than 10 years)
Pros
I've been at GCI for close to 20 years and have always loved the ability to learn & grow and find new career paths within the company.
Cons
The past 18 months have been incredibly challenging. There has been constant restructuring within GCIB and not all for the best. Change is constant and communication about these changes has been less than satisfactory to say it politely. Employees no longer feel secure and morale on the Business side at least is the lowest I've ever seen it. Great people have left, are leaving or feel like they are being forced out.
Advice to Management
Think changes through before implementing - for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Things are changing so fast that processes aren't updated or communicated and staff don't always know how they should be doing their jobs.
Employees no longer feel valued, good people have been let go and good people are leaving. The new upper management doesn't appear to understand the culture of GCI or their market. The Alaska economy is quickly declining and GCI just wants to provide the top of the line most expensive options. Look at the business environment in the state and see how you can help them operate their business affordably - you will have loyal customers.
Keep your staff updated on changes, you would benefit from getting input from staff that has been around a long time.
Let your staff know that they are appreciated. Most of the staff are over worked and have more stress than they should. You are losing good people and don't seem to care.
I have been working at GCI full-time (More than 8 years)
Pros
Depending on the department you can find yourself gainfully employed for a good amount of time.
Cons
Like any telecom company, youre constantly surprised by the lack of resources to efficiently do your job.
Advice to Management
Spend more time with your subordinates. Actually spend time to see what it is they do, how they do it, and why they don't do it in the way you want them to. Being out of touch with how things actually GET DONE is common to many departments.
I worked at GCI full-time
Pros
Good pay and full benefits, including performance-based yearly raises, 401k matching, educational benefits, full health benefits, 3-4 weeks paid vacation, periodic job market study based pay adjustments, plus opportunities to work on sales projects regardless of what department you are in.
Lots of opportunities to cross-train and shift over to other departments to develop your career.
Well-managed, especially at the C-level - very focused, talented, and admirable founder/CEO, GM, COO, and VPs. Lots of communication between C-level and entry-level, both via email and in person. They keep you constantly informed about how the company is doing. Most middle management great as well. Lots of friendly and fun people.
Cons
A bit more employee training - especially technical training - would be beneficial to the company, employees, and customers (though People Styles is great!).
Occasional promotion of family or friend of senior management over more qualified candidates.
Advice to Management
Consider investing a bit more in training and career development for employees.
I have been working at GCI full-time (More than 10 years)
Pros
Great opportunity for advancement and technical education.
Cons
Not many, I enjoy working at GCI
Advice to Management
Keep appreciation of employees high, training is a must.

Pros
If you need experience this is a good starting point.
Cons
It has gone from mildly disorganized to chaos over the last 5 years. Senior management is almost totally disconnected. Middle management is panicking all of the time. Turnover is high, pay is roughly 2/3 of market with extensive overtime expected. Promotion is based on personality and "flash" no longer merit or ideas. This company is eating itself.
Advice to Management
Watch out for group think, talk to staff without middle management around. Quit promoting people past their highest level of incompetency. If everyone is agreeing with you then you likely aren't getting the real story.

Opportunities for growth are everywhere.
Education assistance is great for those seeking furthering their education
Cons
Pay might not be adequate enough for work load given by supervisors.
Advice to Management
Promote first and give a larger workload. Some supervisors expect you to perform higher tasks before being promoted.
