I worked at General Dynamics NASSCO full-time

    Pros

Lots of overtime, company provided your tools, get paid weekly, benefits included dental & health (not vision) and different plans to be in even a free one.

    Cons

Parking in the morning combined with the Navy was havoc, some equipment was overdue on wear and tear made it difficult to sometimes complete a task. No guaranteed work unless they get a new contract.

I have been working at General Dynamics NASSCO full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Relatively stable work flow for engineering, good exposure to heavy manufacturing processes, and benefits offer are above average.

    Cons

Small engineering department with limited design capability and depth of knowledge compared to the other 'Big 5' shipyards, tend to re-cycle previous designs. Little opportunity for knowledge gain nor career advancement within engineering. Most if not all tasks are discrete, and it can be as little as 2 hrs.

    Advice to Management

None..... the enterprise is established to focus on production efficiency, with heavy emphasis on standardized processes, including engineering. It's working for production however, personally I do feel in the push for efficiency limits or constraints independent thinking and/or innovation.

I have been working at General Dynamics NASSCO (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Constantly changing work and new projects. I love it, but it really depends on your supervisor!
It is a shipyard that does stand behind its stance on safety. I've always been impressed by that.

    Cons

Someone has to quit or retire if you want to go into management. If you want to stay technical, its great because so many baby boomers are retiring.
