    I worked at Geosoft full-time

    Pros

People are easy to work with. No micromanagement. After work socializing regularly. Room to move into other roles within the company.

    Cons

Not many cons at all. Maybe too many company wide meetings.

    Advice to Management

    Stay engaged with your employees.

"Company with very nice people, but dated mindset"

    Pros

    - This company has the nicest colleges I've ever worked with
    - HR is very helpful and friendly
    - On-boarding experience is amazing
    - Relatively relaxed working environment
    - Working from home policy

    Cons

    - Company is almost 30 years old, and mindset is a bit behind the current tech trend
    - Senior management not willing to commit to innovation initiatives, company was sticking to a somewhat dated app and hard to adopt any new technologies
    - PMs or people managers got promoted way faster than engineers. Some managers have no idea how to manage engineers. And they're not technical at all.
    - Bunch of layoffs since oil/the whole sector is not doing well. Guess this one doesn't count.

    Advice to Management

    - If management still believes it's a software company then they need to pay attention to what's happening in tech. Not just to stick to what company has right now.
    - Managers need to know or at least learn how to manage engineers.

I worked at Geosoft full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Wouldn't have missed it for the world. Great people, incredible career opportunities. Wouldn't have got my current job without them.

    Cons

Never trust the leadership team. If you like to work 10 hour days, never go offline except to sleep, make significant contributions to the company's success every day for many years, only hear happy news from the leadership team, then be ok to get laid off just make their revenue targets (and they still blow a lot of what would have been your salary on their annual event) then Geosoft is for you.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Geosoft full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Very flexible hours.

Flexible with working from home whenever you need.

    Overall good compensation.

Paid volunteer days away from the office is a novel idea.

    Cons

Manager tends to neglect Agile practices, they more or less go with the flow and just resolve issues when we run into it, making it very difficult to determine deadlines.

Not very ambitious with new project ideas/plans, relying very heavily on building on or fixing/refactoring old legacy code.

Higher ups don't seem to care on what new ideas you may have, just fix the way it's being done now or when we need to, often altering your current workflow at a moment's notice.

Given current market on energy and mineral exploration, there doesn't seem to much opportunity for a lot of revenue for the company anytime soon.

Higher ups have no problems letting people go when the need arises.

Some days can drag on and get very boring since any progress on projects runs at a snails pace making most of the day pretty pointless, might as well offer an unlimited vacation policy if people can have so much time wasted during the day.

    Advice to Management

Be more open to employees ideas to push the boundaries of existing or creating new software and ideas, perhaps in the form of "hack days".

Offer professional growth or education within the company more.

I have been working at Geosoft full-time

    Pros

benefits and salary okay, some good people work here, good environment for inexperienced people, work at home option (for some)

    Cons

failure to acknowledge shortcomings, inability to respond to industry trends, lack of innovation, new ideas will be stifled, no opportunity for career advancement, managers fail to inspire and motivate, office politics, work at home option (nobody is actually in the office anymore, have to wonder??), restructuring and staff leaving in these tough times yet no belt tightening on international travel, parties and various bonuses, staff have no manager to go for help on issues personal or otherwise

    Advice to Management

be real, be honest, take responsibility, think outside of the box, reduce top heavy management

I worked at Geosoft full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Incredible group of people to work with, very open in terms of innovation/collaboration, telecommute, relatively flexible hours, bonus system and professional development plans, great company to learn about global impact of software within industry and promote the idea of working as a family

    Cons

Innovation/collaboration only goes so far, Professional development hits a ceiling in under 5 years so succession planning is limited, executive management seem to be holding on for retirement, Quarterlry town halls are long winded exercises that even the executives seem bored of.

    Advice to Management

Step aside and let some new ideas breathe innovation in to this flagging software company or look for investors to build the company further

    Pros

Beautiful location, great big well-equipped office, very competitive salary, annual professional development opportunities, ability to telecommute, flexible hours, modern technologies. Great opportunities for professionals in mineral exploration or energy business (geology, geophysics, GIS, etc.)

    Cons

Innovations are rarely welcome, senior leadership is practically non-existent, promotions are often based on seniority hence competence of the management is debatable. Software and business people can easily do better elsewhere if they are smart.

    Advice to Management

The times are changing fast, so should you.

    Pros

Flexible work hours, work from home, excellent benefits, and fantastic co-workers.

    Cons

The company pays the median, silo-ed work environment, communication challenges. Little innovation, competitors are gaining ground.

    Advice to Management

Focus on one to two things and do them really, really well. Take some chances outside the core user group and build a real long term growth strategy.
