I have been working at Independent Health full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Competitive salary, amazing health insurance, incentives for not being a slob(aka incentives for healthy activities), lots of volunteer opportunities, great coworkers. On site gym.

    Cons

401k match doesn't hit until after a year which is kind of silly. Company is smaller so there is a limit to movement up the ladder. Less vacation time than would be expected. Work/ life balance is needed.

    Advice to Management

401k match after 90days instead of a year. Split sick days and vacation days into two separate pools but keep the same amount of vacation and add 5 sick days. Incentives for wellness are amazing!

    Pros

good people, trying hard to get the job done. A few good leaders. Many long time employees. CEO is friendly.

    Cons

Executive management is dysfunctional and does not get along well together. Similar functions are split across different executives, so duplication happens and people struggle to get consistency having several masters. Most upper management focused on own careers, not yours.

    Advice to Management

replace the execs that don't get along

I have been working at Independent Health full-time

    Pros

Great benefits and compensation. Work on relevant tools. Employees are very caring, compassionate and under standing. If you give your all and support others they will support you as well and more.

    Cons

Change does not happen quickly. You are working within government regulations which can slow down the process. Some times it feels like you are a Porsche driving around a track with 1920s buggies. Training is limited.

    Advice to Management

Help your employees grow and buy more training.

I worked at Independent Health full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

great benefits with little cost to the employee, wages are competitive, supervisors are good and many people have been there for years

    Cons

don't really "walk the talk", big focus on culture but little meaningful actions, big focus on managing cost instead of being focused on the customer

    Advice to Management

get out of your offices and be visible to the staff way too many meetings and few decisions, every thing takes forever to approve because no one wants to make a decision

    Pros

They provide free coffee, tea and hot chocolate. There is an employee appreciation day once a year that is nice.

    Cons

Micromanagement at all levels. Associates are purely a number and very much replaceable, which is made known. Workload is unrealistic and you will sacrifice family and personal time. At least one person cries from the pressure every week. Wages are low in the production environment. You cannot trust anyone in this organization.

    Advice to Management

Stand behind your production associates, stop treating your associates like they do not matter, communicate openly instead of all the back room conversations.

I worked at Independent Health full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The overtime is minimal in the IT department. Employees usually stay a long time at the company due to the great benefits. There is a lot of holiday and vacation time and they are flexible if you need time off for family/time with your kids.

    Cons

Every five years there seemed to be a turn over in the regime of the IT department. A CIO would get replace then fire all the current managers and bring in all their friends and managers from another company and it would change the structure of the whole department for the worse.

    Advice to Management

    Don't change a good thing.

I have been working at Independent Health full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

People care about each other there. You won't get walked out the door because you are having a hard week or month or even a year. There are a lot of fun people and the culture is fairly relaxed, especially for an insurance company.

    Cons

There is a high resistance to change at IH. If you are a person who wants to solve the root of a problem, you will probably be very frustrated. There are many people in leadership roles that do not understand technology but try to steer technology decisions. This results in lots of money wasted on vendors and internal technical team members struggling to make bad solutions work. HR is also extremely inflexible and limits pay below market. The structure of pay and bonuses is in complete opposition to performance culture making it a comfortable spot for people with no interest in achievement. If you are a high-achiever, there is a lot of dead weight around that will try to drag you down to their level of performance. The yearly review process is time consuming, extremely tedious, and mostly pointless but it "must" be done on an arbitrary date, despite of anything important that you might be busy with. There are many project managers with apparently not enough work to do so they spend their time interfering with people who are trying to get real work done and pretending to be actual management.

    Advice to Management

Realize that all significant companies are technology companies in the 21st century. For a company that primarily processes data, it's crazy to keep treating software like it's someone else's problem. Stop trusting software vendors above your own people. Get HR out of the way of creating a performance culture. In other words: pay people what they deserve. Get rid of most of the project management staff and refocus them on tracking and reporting the status of projects instead of vetoing the decisions of experts on the project so that they can "deliver" a failed project on time (not really) and blame the team. Stop letting non-technical leadership make deals at the golf course or over fancy dinners with software vendors and consultants. They are simply spending money to create problems that then require more money and time to clean up.

    Pros

Good benefits. Provides exceptional service to internal and external customers. They are always seeking ways to improve processes that directly contributes to their strategic goals.

    Cons

Sometimes you may have co-workers that really do not want to do their job. Some may not want to work as a team, because of not wanting to adapt to changing circumstances.

    Advice to Management

The management actions and decisions to the employees are suggested to enhance the employees job duties.
