I worked at MassHousing full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits, people, scheduling. Great pay and even better insurance! Never had to bring any work home. Upper management never acted like they were above you

    Cons

None for me! I enjoyed every single day that I worked here and I regret leaving. If I ever had the opportunity to work there again I would in a heartbeat

    Pros

Helping find a good place to live.

    Cons

Merit is rarely considering in promotions.

    Advice to Management

Talk to your staff and look at what they actually do, not just how much they suck up.

I worked at MassHousing (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Retirement pension (if as promised, will be good, but this is unpredictable). Nearly impossible to get fired. Low expectations of real productivity.

    Cons

Office is completely dis-functional. Management largely unaware of problems within staff. Conflicts between employees frequently involve yelling in public meetings. There is a lack of drive among employees because there are no rewards for risk, only punishments. Sexual harassment has been an ongoing issue. There is a secret "in-crowd" that gets raises when others do not. Various departments compete for money. Important projects go unfunded or ignored. Excellent employees are treated poorly. Pervasive bullying, intimidation, favoritism. Political employees refuse to work and are unaccountable. Show up late, drink coffee, smoke cigarettes then go for a drink during lunch, no one cares. Claims to be inclusive and multi-cultural but racism and discrimination happen frequently.

I worked at MassHousing full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Most of the people at MassHousing have been there forever, which can be both a good and bad thing. Everyone is extremely knowledgeable about what they are doing.

    Cons

The bad part of it is that people have become very comfortable. There aren't many opportunities for promotion.

    Advice to Management

Not sure, try to shake things up somehow

I have been working at MassHousing full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The Benefits are outstanding, and is the scheduling. People are nice.

    Cons

Absolutely no room for advancement. Upper Management has not changed since I started working there in 2000. Salaries remained frozen for 4 years. Limited growth potential. If you have aspirations to lead or manage a team, not the place for you. Lack of movement by upper level managers has lead to a general laziness to pervade the company and all work. There's no sense of mission critical work for any department. Just meanders along.

    Advice to Management

The agency needs a shakeup. Too much dead weight has stifled productivity, creativity, and innovation. Time to gently sweep the lifers to the door and let the real work get done.

I have been working at MassHousing full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

A good balance between personal life and professional. No late hours or bringing work home.

    Cons

Having only been there about a year, none have arisen.

    Advice to Management

Your employee's are your greatest asset. Important to recognize good work not only from a monetary fashion but public praise.

I have been working at MassHousing full-time

    Pros

    Work Life balance
    Colleagues helpful and attentive
    Company mission

    Cons

    Very limited opportunities for advancement
Culture lacks thinking outside the box

    Advice to Management

Think outside the box in all aspects of the business and your employees. Get familiar with your employees ambitions and talent and look to use internal resources to cultivate, coach and promote that talent to strengthen the organization and culture of the agency.

I worked at MassHousing full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

MassHousing offers job stability, few non-political employees lose their job. The benefits are good including vacation time and holidays. Most employees have a good work/life balance.

    Cons

MassHousing's main business is lending, but it has many employees doing other public service work. If you aren't working in a division that addresses lending, MassHousing will essentially ignore you unless there are problems. This leads to extreme Dilbert style disfunction. Adding to the frustration in working in such a department, there is no hope for promotion in such departments nor hope of joining other departments. MassHousing will let you do what you're doing until you retire, but it stomp all over you if you want any other sort of career path. Also MassHousing is fairly conservative across departments, and has a severely hierarchical work environment.

    Advice to Management

Lending operations are well run. If you find a way to make other operations less dysfunctional you may be surprised to learn that they can add value to the lending operations, or at least there will be less unpleasant disruptions when problems come to a head.

I worked at MassHousing as an intern

    Pros

    Cons

    Not enough outside work.

    Advice to Management

Provide more hands-on work and outside work.
