I have been working at Metra full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Positive work environment. Management is mostly "hand's off" as long as you do your job. Be on time and follow the rules, get paid. Simple. As far as railroads go, it's a great place to work.

    Cons

Inexperienced management. Change is slow here.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the men and women in the field. They see opportunities that you may not see while sitting in an office.

Nice people to work with. Great benefits. Discounts for working with the company.

Heavy work load. Constant turnover. Constantly busy.

    Advice to Management

Hire more Paralegals. You can afford it

I have been working at Metra full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Strong, stable company with railroad benefits that's only in the Chicago area.

    Cons

Career development seems limited for those that don't have mechanical skill sets.

    Advice to Management

The former mentoring program seems to provide promise for those that are interested in career development.

I have been working at Metra full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

High hourly wages in relation to skill set required for jobs. Most positions at Metra provide on the job training. Job security (no layoffs in 30+year history of company).

    Cons

Limited opportunities for upward mobility. Clerk positions in the field work non traditional hours. Union protection of employees makes it difficult to fire problematic people. Many employees abuse FMLA.

    Advice to Management

Hire more people. Put people in steps for discipline consistently to get rid of problematic employees quicker and bring in new blood.

I have been working at Metra full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Metra is a good company for those who are just starting out in the industry (entry-level) or for those about to retire. Half of their workforce is above the age of 50 so it's a great opportunity to get in, learn the industry and gain some knowledge.

    Cons

The company wants to be innovative and change but is held back by a management team that is lives by the mantra "we have always done it this way." Change is slow, if at all, and you will find that in some ways the environment is very click-ish. If you don't KNOW someone in upper management it's hard to get noticed at times.

    Advice to Management

Take chances, admit when you are wrong, build alliances and communicate more.

    I worked at Metra full-time

    Pros

Best pay for a railroad carrier in the area. Great Health, Vision and Retirement benefits.

    Cons

The company does not care about morale. The hours are tough on your family life. It seems as if they would rather fire you than they would fix whatever problems that you have with supervisors.

    Advice to Management

Listen more to the contract employees about what actually happens on the job.

If you can get in the Pay and Benefits are great.
But you probably need to know somebody to get in here.

    Cons

Inexperienced Managers who only got their positions through political favors

    Advice to Management

Hire based on qualifications, not on who knows who!
