    Pros

Great mission, co-workers & benefits package

    Cons

More competitive financially. Need mentoring program

    Advice to Management

My advice to management and C level staff is to cultivate the young professionals in the organization in order to have what you need in the future. Just pay attention to what's already in your grasp and invest in it.

  5. "Small and generous with PTO but stifled by old timers"

    Pros

NACHC is a small company (< 100 employees) with offices in Bethesda and D.C. For the years that I was there, NACHC gave employees extra time off between Christmas and New Year as well as some time here and there in the summer or big holidays. These were not part of standard NACHC's holidays/vacation days. It has separate sick days and vacation days (not combined PTOs as other companies). Since it is a small company, top management knows who the high and low performers are. Top performers may be given additional opportunities to grow.

    Cons

NACHC has many old timers who have been with the company since its founding days in Dupont Circle. These old timers are set in their ways and since most of them are in senior positions, it is very hard to by pass them. Often time, their old ways of thinking and doing things create barriers for those who want to do things differently and often better. This is part of the reasons why some newer and great people left.

    Advice to Management

Create bench strength across the board and focus on succession planning.

    Pros

Overall the NACHC plays an important role in the health center movement.

    Cons

Many employees at NACHC have been promoted into positions over time but don't necessarily have the professional development to match - directors, VPs, etc. don't have degrees, advanced degrees, or any CEUs from notable organizations. They find themselves in situations where if they were to be laid off or terminated, they would not be hired at the same level or at the same salary as they find themselves at NACHC. This creates a climate of desperation. Some folks will fight tooth and nail in the office political arena to ensure their jobs are safe.

    Advice to Management

Don't minimize the importance of how you treat people.

I worked at NACHC full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great networking if you're interested in nonprofits or healthcare, in general. Most staff are very easy to work with, and many positions offer great flexibility.

    Cons

Much of those in upper management have been with the company 20+ years. If you're looking to try and move up the ladder, there's little room to do so.

    Advice to Management

Be open to allowing new ideas to flow through. Although many people in the executive leadership roles have been a part of the health center movement since it's beginning, there are many new and innovative ideas that could bring a fresh approach to the way things are communicated with members, health center staff, etc.

I worked at NACHC full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Non-profit organization, mission driven, family "network" oriented, significant contributions to the community health center movement, annual conferences with opportunities to travel and network with healthcare professionals, HQ Office positioned in downtown Bethesda -barely a walk to Bethesda metro station, good benefits, free parking for salaried employees, "laid-back" atmosphere -average age of NACHC employee is 47, annual staff events (picnics, cruises, baby showers, parties etc).

    Cons

Small company -about 100 employees scattered in 3 different offices/locations - so "word" (good or bad) can quickly spread throughout the organization. Most NACHC staff tend to be transparent and will let you know exactly what is on their mind (i.e. tell you off if needed). There are some dysfunctional employees who are not addressed by management (because they are management!) and continue on with their function for many years until retirement -because of this, there is not much room for career advancement and growth (unless someone quits or retires). IT staff have a serious attitude- so pray that you do not need their support for any of your day to day. Has a very causal atmosphere - you may get an raised brow if you arrive to work in business professional attire.

    Advice to Management

Some management are set in "their" ways and need a fresh perspective on how things can get done. What was done in 1991 can be done differently or more efficiently in 2014. I guess they really go by "if it's not broken, don't fix it".

I worked at NACHC full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Very nice people, good cause

    Cons

Very disorganized, certain people have no idea what they're doing nor know how to manage properly.
Some people are insanely passive aggressive. Takes awhile to catch on.
Absolutely NO opportunity to grow/move up.

    Advice to Management

Take a close look at some of those people that have been there forever, they may be a real waste of space. Nor do they necessarily know what they're doing anymore.
A little more structure might not be a bad thing...
