Pros

The pay is higher than other companies in the area.

Cons

Wow. I have worked for this company for sixth months now. It has been a terrible experience. I just put in my two weeks' notice. Number one, the patient care with this company is god-awful. They hire some of the rudest individuals I've ever met. Many of my coworkers brag about how they haven't taken a set of vital signs on a single patient in months. THEY BRAG ABOUT THAT! They can't perform the basic lifesaving functions of an EMT. Once hired, there is no further skills training or review. No one cares about the patients and everyone is ok with doing a half-rate job. As someone that has wanted to work in EMS all my life, it's enough to make you sick. I would never let them touch someone I loved. I have seen partners of mine neglect and mock patients on multiple occasions. Secondly, they jerk you around as an employee. I can't count the amount of times they would sneak me out to the schedule for a shift the day before the shift with no notice. It's more common that my paycheck is messed up in some form or another than it shows up correct and on time. They either leave out shifts, don't send me a pay check at all, or it's late. What's worse is the fact that I when I've called them to correct the problem, they blatantly lie to cover up their mistakes after bouncing me around on the phone and hanging up on me several times. Thirdly, they ask us to perform ILLEGAL acts that are out of our scope of practice. I have been instructed on multiple occasions that, in the case of a patient passing away while in our care with a DNR, we are to continue driving to destination, remove the patient from our gurney and put them in a bed at destination, and then notify someone that our patient has died. This way it is not "our problem". The corners this company will cut to make money are scary. This company should not be allowed to function as an EMS entity. I'd be amazed if they haven't been responsible for at least one patient's death.

Best Company I've Worked For

Pros

1. 100% locally owned and operated. The owners live in the community, so they care about the community. This is the only job I've had where the direct owner is actually interested and invested in the lives of new employees. 2. Huge emphasis on safety. The only private company in the Bay Area that uses 100% power cots on their ambulances. The only private company in the Bay Area with auto loads on (some, not all) ambulances. 3. They make sure employees look and feel good by providing proper uniforms. Sturdy 511 uniforms with matching, layered jackets. Best dressed EMT's in the area. 4. A real commitment to integrity. Every company I've worked for has talked a big talk, NorCal is the only company I've worked for that actually puts effort into quality training, equipment, and patient care. 5. Employees step up, not over. Most of the people who leave are leaving for jobs in the fire department, or nursing school, or PD, or PA school. It's incredibly rare to see someone lateral over to a competitor. There's a strong effort to build EMT's into a successful career and to see them advance to something greater. 6. They accommodated my change in schedule when I started medic school. I was able to keep full-time hours working 24-hour shifts, while being a full-time medic student through my didactic and clinicals. I've never had an employer so easily recognize that I had a life off the clock, and be proud to support me through it.

Cons

I have a long career history in different industries. This is the best employer I've had the pleasure to work for, and alongside some of the most amazing and heroic first responders I've ever met. I feel entirely blessed that I was able to begin a medical career with a company where I had amazing mentors; it was just kind of a lucky strike for me. If I had started with another company, I doubt I'd be anywhere near as skillful and confident in EMS as I am today.

Great Stepping Stone!

Pros

Great people to work with in a variety of stations all over the Bay Area. Management is open to hearing your voice and you will feel respected. 8, 10, 12 hour shifts but you can expect to go over your shift times many of the time, "calls stack" as they say. Work hard for at least year to gain that needed experience! Some people stick around for a few years and some decide to move up in the company. Either way, opportunities open! You'll excellent hands-on experience for a variety of fields and life skills that you will always use no matter where you go in life!

Cons

Dispatch team can be the most difficult to work with sometimes. Anonymity really can distance people and set a prejudice that only grows more touch to break. The uniforms are great during the winter but sure are heavy in the warmer months, near impossible in the hottest months. EMTs are vastly underpaid for what they do, no matter where you go. Transport EMT work can be quite dull.
