Internal Bureaucracy

Pros

- team members are nice - decent compensation for US employees

Cons

- constantly changing the business model. This means what is expected of you and the manner in which you do those things will likely change a number of times. Sometimes there will be a change that's discussed and never actually comes to fruition before another pivot takes place. This effects both higher strategy and individual team expectations. - very little diversity (team of 30+ members and no POCs) - openly hires overseas talent to control employment costs - an absolutely insane amount of meetings (both internal and client facing). Somewhere around 60/40 split of meetings and actual work time. - a lot of internal bureaucracy and fluff (a lot of creating and checking off tasks in project management tools, vanity deliverables to clients just to "CYA", and a very strong preference to do things for internal compliance rather than client success). Clients are also expected to be active in all project management tools and nearly all of them complain about it. - a lot of politicking involved if you want career advancement. Client success or satisfaction is secondary to internal politics.

Pros

I have worked at Newfangled for over a decade. For someone of my age, a tenure of that length is rare. But the diversity of experiences I've had while working here is not. I've performed many different roles in my time here and held six different titles. This has been possible because the organization is in a continual state of evolution, both in terms of keeping pace with our industry as well as reflecting the continual growth and change of the people who work here. That's something unique about this place: the people who work here like change and pursue it relentlessly for themselves, each other, and their clients. It's a core element of the culture, and a tie that binds the five core values of the organization. These aren't published publicly, but are known, understood, and shared by every employee, and worthy of consideration by anyone interested in working here: (1) Newfangled is relationship focused, which means a belief that the business thrives when there is alignment among the individual talents, interests, and goals of our colleagues and clients. (2) Newfangled is results focused, which means a that the business is most effective when it is focused solely on the overlap between its employees' unique abilities and its clients’ needs. (3) Newfangled is visionary, constantly evaluating where the market is heading, and which tools and approaches will create the best results. (4) Newfangled is constantly improving. It is made up of practically-minded, lifelong learners who are expected to solve complex problems. (5) Newfangled pursues Unique Ability at every level, working with every team member to understand and discover what their unique strengths are and how they can contribute to the business.

Cons

Newfangled is managed with an entrepreneurial approach at every level, which means that not only is there opportunity for each employee to contribute to the direction of the business, it is an expectation that they do so. Not everyone prefers that sort of environment, the pace that comes with it, or is able to thrive if expected to create new systems as often as pursue excellence within existing ones.

Pros

I've found more professional opportunity at Newfangled than at any other job in my career. It's a place that encourages employees to discover their unique ability and apply it toward the great good of the firm. When I joined roughly four years ago, I developed a strong interest in creating a structured content marketing consulting service, and I was given the autonomy, support, and encouragement to do just that. It's important to me that I've had a real role in shaping our business, and I can point to many individuals inside of our firm who could share similar stories of using their interests and skill sets to put forward new ideas and create something new. Also, the benefits here are amazing. We essentially have a "take it as you need it" time off policy. Flexible work from home hours. We take a four day retreat to the mountains every year. We have numerous company-sponsored lunches and social events throughout the year. Newfangled does a lot to give back to its staff. And finally, I love the people. We're a small group, currently around 15 people, and we all really care about and support one another. And I have to say, my colleagues are brilliant. Working at Newfangled means working among some of the best in the industry, and I value the motivation that brings to me. I'm always inspired by and eager to learn from and collaborate with my colleagues, and I'd venture to say that's true for most everyone here.

Cons

We move fast and things can sometimes change quickly. The nature of working in digital marketing today requires us to operate that way. It's important to be flexible and nimble if you choose to work here.
