I have been working at NextFab full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

What a wonderful community I've stumbled upon, I am truly blessed to work here. They give employees every opportunity to advance. HR improves all the time. They encourage and cultivate creativity, professional development, and positive interactions. I enter the building everyday excited to work towards rewarding and meaningful goals.

    Cons

Can be demanding as it is still a small company that makes you put on many different hats.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing!!!!

I have been working at NextFab full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I see a lot of negative reviews on here, but I think it's definitely worth talking about the efforts of management to listen and take critique in the past 18 months or so. Roles are being more clearly defined, there is a new, fantastic HR presence, and the team has been very well built out with both the technical and managerial staff. Recommendations for improvement are taken seriously, and acted on. If you're considering...

    Cons

To succeed, you'll need to be able to self-manage. I enjoy this, personally, but for someone who requires a lot of guidance or hand-holding, it might be a bit jarring to have to juggle and manage your time efficiently. The schedule is a bit non-traditional. Office staff work 9:30-6pm, and depending on the role technical staff either work 9:30-6 or 1:30-close. Some staff are asked to work weekend days with their standard...

I have been working at NextFab full-time for more than a year

    Pros

NextFab is an incredible concept that attracts a lot of talented people. Whether you're on staff or just a member, being at NextFab is an opportunity to connect with a unique creative community and enrich your life with new knowledge and skills. It's an environment designed to support learning new things, doing it yourself, and innovative problem solving.

    Cons

At times, NextFab can seem like a sterile engineering facility, separated from the human world, lacking culture, with political landmines awaiting you in every awkwardly tight space. The idea that everyone can do it themselves is ingrained in both the staff and the members of NextFab but often gets in the way of productivity when the DIY project becomes a distraction from the actual problem at hand. That being said,...

    Advice to Management

Leadership is not a skill that everyone can be "cross-trained" in. Recognize that and make way for those who are naturally strong leaders. Remember that you work with humans, not just machines. It's easy to get lost in the engineering world of tools and technology but personal relationships are what make this business run. People should always be the priority and communication is key. Don't DIY. Do it together...

I have been working at NextFab part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

NextFab is still a fairly young company, and something of an experiment. Since it's start seven years ago it has constantly evolved, including opening two satellite facilities. This is a membership organization and the people who join are amazing - artists, inventors, entrepreneurs. Really interesting, really smart people join NextFab. (Contract services are available for those not wanting to do their own fabrication.)...

    Cons

The main South Philadelphia location is open seven days a week for extended hours, so many positions require weekend and evening hours. Satellite locations are also open evening and some weekend hours. This can prove challenging in terms of work-life balance. Change is in the nature of this company so those lacking in flexibility, patience and imagination will have a difficult time here. Those with a misanthropic...

    I worked at NextFab part-time

    Pros

You will learn a lot of skills and play with some cool toys. Some employees are pretty great people and you will learn a lot from them as well. The main positive was I gained skills that helped with a career move. However I wish I just joined as a member to get those skills.

    Cons

Although you will undoubtedly learn a lot in any position, you will not have time to work on personal projects as you will be so overworked it is near impossible to come in on your time off. Shop salaries are laughable, some dedicated employees who have been there many years make less than 15/hour. Other salaries are all over the place with no rhyme or reason as to why certain managers make 20k more than others. ...

Pay your employees what they deserve. You would be nothing without the shop supervisors.

I have been working at NextFab full-time

    Pros

NextFab allows me to impact people and communities directly - there is nothing more fulfilling than being a part of an organization that positively impacts people lives. Innovative and collaborative environment Diversity The community of makers, entrepreneurs, artist, crafters and dreamers The passionate leadership & management teams and the incredible technical staff

    Cons

With so much Technology, so many great Ideas and an endless number of fascinating members in one place, it can be a challenge to stay focused! In all honesty, my experience working with NextFab has been nothing other than excellent, like I said, it's hard to call it work!

    Advice to Management

Continue to bring in highly skilled individuals and the next generation software and equipment.

I have been working at NextFab full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

NextFab has a work environment like no other. Every day is unique based on what projects are currently underway. I have not had a single day in years of full time employment at NextFab without learning something new and relevant. I love learning, making, designing, and problem solving, so for me, new challenges are stimulating and exciting. I have never been bored at my job and I feel like I'm growing daily in my skills...

NextFab has a work environment like no other. The wide variety of services that NextFab offers requires staff to be dynamic and flexible every day. Once you feel like you've mastered your job responsibilities and are feeling confident, a new situation is bound to pop up and knock your confidence down a peg or two. Some take this in stride, but for others it can be demoralizing over time. The constant adaptation and high...

    Advice to Management

I have seen significant improvement in the management styles and processes in my time at NextFab, but there is always room for more.As NextFab continues to grow, I'd like to see more bridges built between staff and upper management. As departments and locations become more independent and autonomous, let's ensure that doesn't invite divisions and communication gaps.

    I worked at NextFab full-time

    Pros

Some of your coworkers will be the coolest people you'll ever meet. You'll have access to machinery that is hard to come by. You may learn a cool new skill in the shops, but you'll have to come in on your day off in order to utilize it.

    Cons

Respect from management is severely lacking. You likely won't be able to afford to do anything in your spare time because the pay is not up to snuff -- and certainly isn't "market rate" as management will claim. And by market rate, they go by the job title in your offer letter -- not the 2 or 3 other jobs you will be given. You will walk in that door willing to sacrifice time and money for the right "culture" and...

    Advice to Management

Invest in your employees. The place is rife with resentment and weariness. NextFab doesn't have to be a stepping stone for talented staff. It can be their home, but you're going to have to hike up the per-hour rate by 5-10 dollars. Philly is getting expensive, and you demand too much from people. The maker world has its eye turned to you, you could accomplish something great. Focus in on 1 or 2 things you can reasonably...

I have been working at NextFab full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Not the kind of place where you're expected to wear a suit and put in 60 hour weeks. The 10-6 hours are pretty nice when it comes to avoiding the major rush of people trying to get to work by 8 or 9 am. The company will provide work shirts in a variety of styles, which is nice when every day work can wear through them quite quickly (if you want to provide your own shirts, you can do that too). Benefits are good for...

NextFab's Business is complex, due to all of the offerings they have. This forces most staff to fill a number of roles which may or may not align with their education and experience. The opportunity to learn is valuable, but the situation can sometimes lead to a person feeling in over their head and expected to perform. This complexity also means it takes new employees some time to get up to speed, which can be draining...

    Advice to Management

Communication and planning are definitely not the strong points of the company. We're constantly adjusting and pivoting to handle things last minute that could have been planned in advance. Over time, this fatigues the staff physically and mentally, and lowers morale. This has been the single most consistent complaint in my years at the company, and probably the only thing that doesn't seem to be steadily improving over...

    Pros

You’ll have a close encounter during your employment with an individual who will whole heartedly demonstrate to you that money does not buy happiness. Subsequently, you’ll never be able to tolerate working for another incompetent, petty, and/or disrespectful human being again, having truly gotten your fill working for Nextfab for what will be no longer than a 6 to 12 month period of employment.

    Cons

You’re most likely reading this because the entire staff resigns annually and you came across a job posting. Several job postings. Several acres of red flags blowing in the breeze. Your phone is ringing. They’re calling you to make you an offer that is $10k less than you reasonably asked for in that stuffy interview. Go to the blender. Put your phone in the blender. Puree it.
