Pros

Free soda Direct boss was smart and a go-getter

Cons

Rats, roaches, leaking ceilings The ceiling would leak in the factory where racks are built. One time there was a puddle on the floor with an extension cord in it. The factory and burn in room temp ranges from 80-90 degrees on an average day. We were building high tech equipment and not even taking care of it. CFO at the time ordered us to ship racks he knew weren't ready so he could take the revenue, saying he'd send a guy on site to fix them later. In fighting over POLITICS to the point of fighting between departments. Not company politics. Actual politics. No money to do anything at all. Company is so focused on sales they neglect to build up the infrastructure. Lot of people 'work from home' and are never in the office or available. Basic procedures are not in place. Most people thought it was a start-up.

Penguin Computing Response

This review is inexplicable. The reviewer did not review his/her own years of gainful employment that Penguin Computing provided - including responsible work, autonomy, high pay, annual bonuses, spot bonuses, Christmas gifts, frequent catered and restaurant lunches, uncapped PTO, excellent benefits, 401k Match, flexible schedule, and work-from-home privilege that the reviewer and family greatly benefited from. Instead of expressing gratitude for the opportunity Penguin Computing provided, the reviewer instead chose to cherry-pick one-time incidents that he/she knows have already been resolved. We are proud to be one of the early adopters of a "results only" culture, where the focus is on accomplishment, rather than the old-school value on how many hours you've logged in the office. We know that satisfied customers begin with satisfied employees. Our flexible work culture makes striking a balance between work and life a lot easier! Our CEO openly shares information including company financial status, strategic plans, new customers, new projects, and new goals. Penguin Computing has a voluntary turnover rate of less than 10%. The reviewer's goal appears to be more about harming Penguin Computing than providing objective, balanced information for prospective employees. Clearly, Penguin Computing offers more "Pros" than "Free Soda" - though free soda is among the 40+ items on our free snack offerings.

Pros

Amazing co-workers, supportive and competent middle management.

Cons

The software team is geographically scattered with just about everyone working from home, typically on separate projects. This makes communication and "belonging" for lack of a better word a bit difficult. Development effort are often subordinated to helping push out large orders.

Pros

None. They took us to the aquarium once. That was the only time we got an off-site in the 4ish years I worked there. They brought us free food sometimes but it was fast food and not healthy. Sometimes they would bring us ice cream from McDonalds when it was 90+ degrees on the manufacturing floor in the summer when the A/C units didn't work right.

Cons

So many. It really hurt my career to work here. I have not found any positives. There is a lot of yelling and finger pointing from management to folks who may not even speak english well enough to understand what they did wrong. When problems arose management would default to "the boys club" and not actually see that the insane hours and working over several weekends and the HEAT on the manufacturing floor was causing anxiety and other mental health issues for most of the employees involved. The end of month and end of quarter "pushes" were the worse. Planning on any type of vacation, or dinner with family was near impossible if you worked on the manufacturing floor. Oh and "the boys club". They have a tendency to hire their friends who may or may not be qualified. But hey if you have a radio call sign you are qualified to work here! Doesn't matter if you have never used Linux before.
