I have been working at Red Wing Shoe part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Hours are great. Atmosphere and pace are great. It's nothing like retail in a mall. Once you've learned your stuff there, it's not that difficult, especially during the "off" season months.

    Cons

Small staff means more responsibility for everyone than at bigger stores. It also makes it harder to call out or re-schedule things sometimes. Dealing with dirty shoes is probably the worst part.

    Advice to Management

Best advice would be to try and schedule people for the best times/when it's busiest. And maybe to try and resist overstocking the inventory. Relatively minor things.

Good pay, Good commission, Job is doable, but not easy.

    Cons

Get treated like crap, not organized managing . Really bad benifits

    Advice to Management

    Pros

store manager is free to run his/her store without much higher management interference as long as you follow all corporate guidelines. Very rewarding as long as you enjoy one on one customer interaction. Also you have control as to what merchandise to buy for your location

    Cons

Manager is not a salaried position. Corporate customer service does not always stand behind the store manager's decision involving customer disputes.

    Advice to Management

keep up the great work. Also if a manager breaks a rule and it costs him his job, try to believe in second chances!!

    Pros

Great atmosphere, management puts a lot of focus on their employees, employee perks, casual atmosphere, friendly co-workers, growing company with promotion opportunities.

    Cons

The pay is not competitive at all, paid time off benefits are poor,

    Advice to Management

Adjust the budget for employee pay, so that you don't lose some of your most qualified employees.

    Pros

Very stable company; RWSC doesn't chase quarterly results at the expense of long term gains. Work/life balance would be hard to top; extremely flexible in every regard. Epitome of stability. The City of Red Wing is a great place to work for most people.

    Cons

Too accepting of poor performers. Seems almost impossible to be terminated for performance. Commutes from the MPS metro are similar in time to those into downtown MPS or St Paul, but much longer in distance (pro or con?) Career growth may be limited.

    Advice to Management

Hire more top performers, and be less willing to accept mediocrity. Provide more opportunities for bench growth.

    Pros

Easy job, relaxed, stable. Red Wing shoes has a great product and has been around for over 100 years. Employee discount on boots is awesome.

    Cons

Management is only out for themselves. Very selfish, condescending toward employees. Absentee owner is very disconnected to how his stores are being run. Many associates are disgruntled.

    Advice to Management

    Re-evaluate your own position.

I worked at Red Wing Shoe full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

For a small to mid sized privately help company there are many opportunities from retail to manufacturing, from global presence to ecommerce. Everyone appears nice on the surface.

    Cons

Pay is below average, top management, even with the recent CEO change is out of touch and dysfunctional. And if you don't live in Red Wing MN then you will always been seen as an outsider. Long term employees (30-40 yr tenures) are out of touch with today's world, distrust new hires and do not want to change. Hostile and abusive environment for anyone that that thinks different.

    Advice to Management

Clean house and bring in fresh talent or this icon of a company will be easy to topple.
