I have been working at Root9B full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Your work makes a difference. root9B does not make magic boxes or do checkbox pentests. They care about real solutions and results.

Lots of smart motivated people with interesting experiences to work with.

    Good locations.

Flexible hours and remote/in office and good work life balance.

    Cons

Priority ADD; some people were flipped from one priority to another every few months without finishing them.

Minor IT annoyances: core systems often get overloaded; collaboration and timesheet software is in a bad state.

    Advice to Management

Focus. Don't try to do everything at once.

Improve collaboration between different groups; make sure people are on the same page earlier. Make sure your public releases and community engagements are quality too.

    I have been working at Root9B full-time

    Pros

Cyber security is booming, and I am proud to work with one of the top cyber security companies in the country The people are the best in the industry, and the passion all the way up to management is apparent every day.

    Cons

Sometimes you experience the 'startup' pains. root9B is learning and growing, so there is not always an immediate answer to your question. It seems like they are working to create a 'standard' and getting official policies in place.

I have been working at Root9B full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

root9B sets high standards, and consistently delivers. Top-level management is extremely experienced and has a great sense of vision and planning for the direction of this company. Their mission is quite simple: “Providing global cybersecurity solutions through technical innovation, tailored operations, and professional excellence.” From what I have seen to date accomplishment of their mission is a team effort that root9B is laser beam focused on delivering.

    Cons

root9B Official Merchandise store has yet to launch. (Glassdoor mandates Cons) - I have worked for many different companies and organizations. Many times, the vision of the organizations was not clear. root9’s vision is clear and so darn important in today’s times. “A corporate America with an information security infrastructure impervious to the adversary.” The men and women in this company see clearly and understand why the vision is a goal they must strive to achieve for our country.

I have trained many troops in the Army Intelligence field and within the DoD sector. Thinking back to the root9B vision; root9B believes in learning by doing. root9B’s training methodology is to immerse cyber warriors in scenario driven environments to learn and practice the methodologies being taught; our methodology reflects this philosophy. root9B’s cyber training is world class, taught by seasoned operators that have been in the field utilizing what they are teaching.

    Advice to Management

root9B is Red, White and Blue. If you want to be challenged and believe in hard work, interview and help us carry our guidon. root9B takes care of its own. Do not interview if you’re not willing to sacrifice your time and efforts in helping root9B accomplish its solid mission and crystal clear vision.

    Pros

I love working here and am passionate about the mission, the people and the culture. The people are all professionals and passionate, patriotic and talented at what they do.

    Cons

Has the challenges of a small company that is maturing its processes. So sometimes things are a little "untidy" from a documented process perspective (but they also recognize that and are actively working to address the opportunity).

    Advice to Management

Keep on with the same focus and passion working with Government and the commercial sector, and bringing on the A-game players.

I worked at Root9B (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Company has a great team of people, positioned in a high growth area with unlimited potential for career opportunities and continued growth. Solid team of individuals through out the organization

    Cons

fast developing area, management must be able to keep up with the pace of change and be creative as business changes. the CEO has the experience to lead the company to great heights and has proven success, his ability to mold the current executive team which is not as experienced will be important

    Advice to Management

stay focused and communicate effectively with the company, remember what the culture was that was established in the past and the value system the employees joined that is what the people expect.

I have been working at Root9B full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

root9b is a rapidly growing company that has some top talent. It's a very relaxed environment that's only stressful when you're trying to impress a new client. You have much of the freedom to do what you wish and feel is most beneficial for the whole company.

[+] Snacks and Monster on stock, all over the place
[+] Intelligent coworkers (this speaks volumes)
[+] Workers have extensive knowledge of real-world APTs from nation states
[+] Work from home is an easy option because everything can be done via VPN access
[+] Easy to see the difference you're making
    [+] Easy management interaction
    [+] High salaries
    [+] Liberal leave policy
    [+] Fun atmosphere
    [+] Beer Fridays!!!

    Cons

Like anything, there are some areas of improvement, and root9B is no different.

[-] VERY difficult to break into this company (as is cybersecurity in general)
[-] In-house developed tools feel forced. Other industry tools could do better job
[-] Corporate HR sucks (!) Working with them feels like pulling teeth
    [-] Management isn't transparent
[-] Individuals sometimes feel like they can do better.
[-] Except for pentests, they don't use Linux (WTF?!)

    Advice to Management

Increase transparency. Look for your worker-bees to come up with solutions. Quit reinventing the wheel. And for gods sake, use Linux.

I have been working at Root9B full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Autonomy, cutting edge services, interesting people, friendly employees. Don't kid yourself, this is mostly run by former military, LE, etc. People who come here should be flexible and be willing to contribute. This company has a real opportunity to grow something amazing for those who are willing to work for it. I couldn't be happier to be part of it.

    Cons

As with many startups, there are growing pains. It takes time to figure out where everyone will fit, how HR/admin procedures work best and so on. If you're not willing to take those things with a grain of salt and be flexible while the kinks are ironed out, I see why this place wouldn't be for you and my advice would be to keep your distance.
I don't understand the vitriol of some people who either claimed they worked here or have posted things online that are either wild exaggerations or flagrant untruths. It has made it hard to watch fellow employees get discouraged when they are working so hard to build this company. I assume fear of this company doing well is to blame for the slander. Either way it doesn't matter, because our performance will outpace the negativity. Period.

    Advice to Management

Employee appreciation is sometimes put on the back burner due to the rapid rate of growth. Don't worry about saying good job as much as taking the time to put your finger on the pulse of morale. Some employees want to make sure they're not forgotten or taken for granted. A good way to do that is to give us all a bag of money periodically with a dollar sign on the front. Like out of Looney Tunes. You may want to think about robbing a bank or robbing an old timey train.

I have been working at Root9B full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Working in a very unique and dynamic start-up which has very good potential for future growth is a rare opportunity, and one that employees at root9B all enjoy. The climate is friendly and professional but hardly rigid, still a very results oriented company where a sense of individual ownership is communicated throughout..

    Cons

Success has made the company a target for some such as short sellers who see an opportunity to make money dishonestly at the expense of others. There is a certain amount of stress that comes with seeing lawsuits launched against the firm even when you are absolutely certain that they're fraudulent.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you're doing, hiring talented individuals and giving them license to succeed. Continue to communicate the mission to employees at every level, to bring real security solutions to a market in critical need of defense.

I have been working at Root9B full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Exciting, challenging work. Lots of opportunities to be innovative and create new unique capabilities. Opportunity to work with top-notch talent in cyber security field.

    Very competitive compensation.

Lots of improvements over the last year: better benefits, improved holiday/sick/PTO policy, formalized training and conference attendance budget.

Unique approach to cyber security - challenging the status quo is likely to cause waves with individuals that don't subscribe to the methodology, and want to hold on to the methods of the last 2 decades (that don't work).

    Cons

401k employer matching needs significant improvement to be competitive (rumor is this is being revamped soon).

Being a public-traded company means there are regulations & requirements that employees that have previously only worked for private companies / government don't fully understand. Additionally, sales processes/timelines are not fully understood by lower-level employees resulting in occasional misunderstandings.

Company has experienced significant growth over the last couple of years -- business processes appear to be catching up to accommodate the growth, but in the interim can lead to some challenges.

    Advice to Management

Continue to formalize the processes (without stifling innovation) and communicate down to the lowest levels.

    I worked at Root9B full-time

    Pros

The pay is competitive to high for the job and location, and the benefits have been marginally improved.

    Cons

The good people that were initially convinced to join by fast-talking higher-ups have either left or are on the way out. Everyone has lost complete faith in the leadership team and realizes they are at best full of false promises or at worst delusional. The next deal is always "right around the corner" or "coming on fast," but little ever materializes. The same goes for organizational changes. Management is opaque, secretive, and tells employees what they think they want to hear to keep them happy, but are finding this only works for so long. The company is now churning tenured, skilled employees and replacing them with young naive staff who will put up with this oppressive type of management. This has left a company that is almost entirely leadership with no real staff to do the work or create the capabilities they constantly oversell. I left the moment another opportunity presented itself.

    Advice to Management

Upper management thinks they are great leaders because they held high positions in the goverment, but they've just brought the same leadership style and strong-arm tactics that caused masses of people to leave their government positions. Get some people with real leadership experience that know how to properly value and treat employees.
