I have been working at Square Enix full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Decent pay
    - Exciting titles coming down the pipeline
    - Talented/Intelligent coworkers (some have been employed for 20 years)
    - Opportunities to grow as a professional
    - A good way to get your foot in the gaming industry
    - Great benefits
    - Great name on resume
    - Global experience

    Cons

    - Doesn’t have environment or culture of similar companies near the area
    - Needs training opportunities/resources for all employees
    - Saturated with office politics. Difficult to get things done due to layers of approvals for anything.
    - Very old school/corporate
    - Lack of transparency
    - Strange department vs department mentality. Will take any chance to throw each other under the bus.

    Advice to Management

Create some culture/employee experience for your employees. You need a “work hard, play hard” environment. Listen to your employees more - you hired them for a reason.

I worked at Square Enix full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Definitely a good place to get some starting mechanic experience, as well as learn a lot of the basics to working in a shop environment

    Cons

Virtually no upward progression for workers

    Advice to Management

Improve pay scale for workers. California is already an expensive state to live in.

    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Square Enix full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Square-Enix is a major game producer that challenges its people to always be ahead in technology. We were enabled to work with the latest tech and to try new ideas that were 5 years ahead of other companies. My manager was awesome and he enabled our success.

    Cons

Everything released is a rehash of previous IP. Square-Enix is living off of past success titles and was not willing to move into mobile in a normal way. Basically they're out of touch with where the game industry is going and staying focused on console and mmo.

    Advice to Management

Branch out and listen to your employees a bit more.

I worked at Square Enix full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Small team feel gives you great visibility in an industry that is usually silo'ed. Ability to learn/observe multiple disciplines should you desire to.

Opportunity to brush elbows and chat with some famous people in the video game industry.

Brand name that will open doors, global operations, training opportunities are available.

Benefits are good for full-time employees. Bonuses can be substantial depending on department/role.

Great work/life balance and a fairly casual atmosphere. Free games and other misc perks pop up from time to time.

    Promotes from within.

    Cons

While bonuses and benefits are good, the salaries at Square are well below industry standard in the LA Metro area. This can make a long term career at the company less viable as the cost of living constantly increases.

Some bad apples exist in middle management, which is unfortunate; as it tends to create a stressful environment out of what would otherwise be a great workplace.

Increasing emphasis on contract employment, slowly degrading the morale of employees/teams and the quality of work at the company.

    Advice to Management

Give US teams more autonomy to operate in their respective market/division/community. Revisit compensation model. Continue with the new vision of the company set by Matsuda.

The top brass at Square Enix is amazing, they know what needs to be done.

    Pros

An nice view of LAX and the freeway/ ocean. I can vouch that some people are good at what they do. The best of the best is here.

    Cons

Most people don't know what they're doing here. I'm sure they got hired because of the referral process. Many employees are friends and/or family members. If you're not friends with the upper management say goodbye to your hours. From Full-time to Part-time in less than two weeks. My coworker has been at an entry level for 4 years. The pay is also very low for a SR xxxxxxx position but it's time to look else where.

    Advice to Management

Treat referrals just as well as you would anyone else you are about to hire. Square Enix makes AMAZING money from what we dispatch. A decent pay would be nice.
