Consultants of Fishbowl, I'm 31 and have ~$2m. No kids, student loans, etc... I'm also getting CTL'd. If you were in my position, would you scramble to get a new position or retire early?

    Pros

    - Small team size allows junior consultants to make immediate impact - Consultants at any level have significant exposure to clients and firm leadership - Entire company travels to Latin American country every 2 years for 4-day house building event

    Cons

    - Travel and hours can be demanding during some projects - Less brand recognition that larger firms

    Fantastic Consulting Experience

    Pros

At the Keystone Group, I've gotten full-spectrum exposure to a wide variety of business issues, covering financial, operational, and organizational issues. This company does a fantastic job of putting a lot of focus on the development of everyone who works here, making sure we're developing skills in all business areas. Finally, the culture here is fantastic - definitely more than a place to punch in and out. We care about each other a lot, and it comes through in the way we treat our clients.

    Cons

Because of the small size of the firm, we're not just consultants. We're our own marketing team, talent acquisition and management, and support staff. It's good experience, but can get to be a lot sometimes. Additionally, because of the client base we work with, a lot of the ways in which we work is fairly traditional - not a lot of video-conferencing or modern office tools.

    Pros

Very capable people providing practical, actionable solutions for clients. Strong focus on excellence and great work while still maintaining a sense of balance.

    Cons

A majority of the work involved working with troubled companies. For some, this is exciting. However, it can be quite stressful.

Great place to see the impact of your work

    Pros

Competitive salary, leadership cares about internal growth/improvement, great place to grow your skills quickly

    Cons

Culture is borderline anti-MBA, which is a turnoff; no diversity (culture is not for everyone), relatively small firm (can be a pro or a con)

    Pros

    - I've learned more here in four years than I have relative to any other portion of my career - The experience relative to age is unmatched - You become a part of the management team at clients as a result of the impactful projects and the importance relative to the company's future - The Directors (Partners) of the firm are smart, experienced, and willing to get in to the details to improve the bottom-line of clients. They are also people you can relate with over dinner or a drink, and who care about your personal development and happiness.

    Cons

    - Travel can be monotonous, but definitely more flexible than other consulting firms - Projects tend to be in "industrial" areas that don't always offer the most diverse food and hotel options - The hours on some projects can be hard, but this tends to ebb and flow throughout the year due to the diversity of project work

Rare Gem in the Consulting Industry

    Pros

-Significant impact on middle-market businesses -Turnaround / Restructuring service line focuses on improving businesses rather than simply taking them through a legal process -Variety of client engagements and service line enables continued learning and growth -Small-firm means that each person is expected to make a significant contribution and be involved in important decisions -Merit-based promotion structure, ability to make decisions on a case-by-case basis rather than through the rigid structure of a larger firm -Very intelligent people who truly care about each other and their clients

    Cons

-Travel lifestyle typical of consulting, although arguably more flexibility than larger firms -While involvement in all aspects of the firm is a unique benefit for employees, sometimes administrative / non-client activities consume more time than one would like

    Unmatched Professional Experience

Sep 6, 2016 - Senior Analyst in Chicago, IL

    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

    • The generalist staffing model gives you experience across all service lines and industries, giving you a broad set of skills • Small team sizes (2-5 ppl) allows for a lot of responsibility for all team members resulting in extremely fast professional development. Even the most junior employees will work directly with partners at the firm and c-level executives at the client • Everyone at Keystone is very smart and talented. You’ll learn a ton from working here.

    Cons

    • Because of the nature of the work, especially turnaround, there will be times you will need to forfeit social time • There are times where there is a lot of pressure to perform well, which is a result of how much responsibility you are given

No Better Place for Professional Development

Aug 23, 2016 - Associate in Chicago, IL
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - High levels of autonomy and responsibility early in career - Middle market focus provides better visibility to the impact of recommendations on clients' financial and operational performance - Opportunities to interact directly with business unit general managers, C-Suite executives, Boards of Directors, bankers, and private equity sponsors - Collaborative culture with supportive and caring people - Emphasis on having fun outside of the office - Ability to become an equity holder earlier than at other firms

    Cons

    - Travel can be tough and client locations are not always easily accessible - Projects can be stressful with high demands - Days leading up to important meetings and presentations can be long
