I worked at Topps Tiles full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Commission earned on everything you sell. Small team, very much like a little family. Bonus available (but hardly ever achievable).

    Cons

Management go out to play golf with the area manager when they're rota'd to work, leaving the other management to do the dirty work and run the store. Hardly any room for development. Bonuses are hardly achievable. Head office constantly increasing figures on targets to make bonus harder to get. Management leave when they want. High amount of unnecessary pressure to achieve targets and head office constantly adding unnecessary processes to go by, otherwise you're threatened with disciplinary action (even if it isn't included in contract, company policy etc). Work basically every Saturday and Sunday. Do not expect a full weekend off, or even a Saturday if you're non management.

    Advice to Management

Stop bringing in stupid new processes to adhere to. Stop making bonus unachievable. You're selling tiles, not houses. It's unnecessary and it drains the confidence and motivation of your team.

    Pros

Good Company, easy to earn good money if performing well. Easily flexible with working hours.
Good staff discount on in store prodcuts.

    Cons

Sometimes management could get very angry if targets were not met, no real man management. Found staff called in on rest days due to bad mystery shop result. Very much a culture of its not what you know its who you know in reference to promotions

    Pros

Great bonuses and commission offered, staffing levels good, hours of work as only 1 late night a week

    Cons

Once you start to hit your targets and get a bonus they move the targets so you get no bonus

    Advice to Management

Listen to your staff, look at what other businesses are doing and do better

I have been working at Topps Tiles full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Easy work if you like people and you are not shy of manual labour. Money is ok...ish..
Depends which branch you are you are based if that branch is doing good you might earn some extra ££££.. If not survive on your basic pay plus few ££ which you can on commision.

    Cons

Get's quiter after Christmas but you will be under pressure to do the Sales even there is very less Footfall.
Targets are Hard to hit, Oh Yeah too much Gossips all over.

    Advice to Management

Matt is a Genuine Guy very Humble, But I dont think he really know's how the bottom staff feels..

I worked at Topps Tiles full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Training is very good but you have to put in the effort and do plenty of reading
Very good and sound technical knowledge available and on hand to help you
Bonus structure is good but very difficult to achieve
Good procedures and guidelines on how to keep your store and practises to good standard
Good performance usually noticed but depends on your line manager
Plenty of information provided corporately and you know whos who in regards to senior management team. Invitation to yearly meetings at head office to tell you whats what....
Fully operational head office team that usually support you very well but not always
Massive emphasis on customer service which is good but hard to implement with the wrong staff
As a Store Manager you have plenty of things you can control and decide upon, in turn making you a better person with better business sense, i.e. preparing you for that future role
Worked with some great people and to be honest its the team that keeps you going

    Cons

Poor basic salary, external candidate gets higher pay than internal candidate.... tell me why???
Bonus system is very very tough to unlock and achieving the full bonus is very rare
Very strict on standards but this is a good thing as well
Very demanding sales targets, requires good team to achieve, but usually they budget you out of a bonus so that they don't have to pay you the bonus, but they still get their sales, clever but wrong. I watched so many mangers lose motivation due to crazy targets.
Managers expected to work overtime for free and you have little choice
The workload is increasing by the quarter, the company expects you get on with it, simple!
I worked on average 56-59hrs a week, was paid for 40, I did this because I wanted to be the best, but very little recognition was given to my effort and sacrifice. Basically the don't care, they expect this and well you have todo this due to the demand and pressure on you!
The senior management team like to say they appreciate the effort, but in reality they just want more and more and more, and you are just a number to them....

    Advice to Management

At a time when Topps Tiles is struggling to fill its vacancies and losing its best people at a silly rate. Its time you stepped back and realised you need to take care of the people that make you rich.....
