    Pros

Great paternalistic company wrestling with the pressures of online competition and decline of physical book and music sales.

    Cons

Stores are a mess these days and everything is about cost cutting, so only join them if you are not in it for the money.

    Advice to Management

Keep going to change business and develop travel retail brands.

I have been working at WHSmith part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It is a great place to work if you are a student because they are very flexible with the hours. During holidays, for example, you can always ask for overtime and earn a bit more cash. The branch, where I work, is a travel store which means that the pay is slightly higher than high street stores. It is quite busy and times flies quickly.
Not sure if high street stores are as flexible as travel stores.
In my store, my store manager is really friendly, and I know him for a very long time now.

    Cons

There is a bad culture from the top management, I am not referring to the store manager, but the area managers and the head office people are very unhelpful, they tend to put a lot of pressure to the store manager in charge. This ultimately results in pressure to sell for sales assistants like me. They tend to maximise the profit without investing in the business. For example, we had the chiller broken down and the aircon was not working for the whole summer, the response from the head office was absent and it still not fixed.
The are no perks for employees except for an embarrassing 10% discount on items that are already overpriced.
In overall, if you are just a student or looking for a part-time job just to earn a bit of extra money then WHSmith is for you. However, if you are thinking of a long-term career in retail, I will not recommend it. There are better retailers out there.

    Advice to Management

Please listen to your store managers.
Listen to the sales assistants and people who work at the bottom of the chain. They have good ideas to improve the business and increase the profit.
Increasing the price continuously is not the right way to keep the profit high.
