    Pros

Great paternalistic company wrestling with the pressures of online competition and decline of physical book and music sales.

    Cons

Stores are a mess these days and everything is about cost cutting, so only join them if you are not in it for the money.

    Advice to Management

Keep going to change business and develop travel retail brands.

I have been working at WHSmith part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Co-workers are a friendly bunch
Co-workers will help with everything if you don't know how to do something or need a reminder of how to do it
It's a fairly easy and not too stressful job, in the store I work in it doesn't get too busy, maybe a maximum of 7-8 customers at a time
It's a good place for a first job
If you're a student your manager will give you hours that'll suit you and your studies

    Cons

Generally made to stand at the till for most of the day, legs always hurt at the end of shifts
If you're a sales assistant it's more than likely that you'll be paid minimum wage
If you do overtime hours you'll be paid your normal hourly rate
The manager is probably the only person at the store paid something they can live off

    Advice to Management

Perhaps try and rotate employees' roles so things don't get repetitive
Make sure your shop floor is free from stock containers, trollies, litter and what have you because many of you have been neglecting your stores and WHSmith is becoming renowned for always having cluttered stores

    I worked at WHSmith full-time

    Pros

To be honest there wasn't much pros - i guess it was a job thats the pro

    Cons

the staff benefits are next to none
work is technically up to you whether you do it or not really so if your an actual worker you end up doing a lot
considering the London living wage - whsmiths still only pay £7.50 ish in London when a lot of retail have started to meet the £9 target.
they don't even do a Christmas do !!
there is nothing to gain from them being employed by them there is no staff incentives at all!!

    Advice to Management

care more about you retail staff
    pay increases
    better management in the stores
don't let people cut corners as paper would get signed but doesn't mean it's get done - not just when a visit is scheduled
