I have been working at ZymoGenetics full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Was a great place to work. The company and upper management really supported growth. Company has a great tuition reimbursement opportunity for those that want to take advantage of it.

    Cons

There was some favoritism, but may not be company wide. Each group was different.

I worked at ZymoGenetics full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

seemingly relaxed biotech atmosphere. nice work life balance. at least for now.

    Cons

whether they will admit it or not, all remaining zymogenetics employees are on notice. and those at the new manufacturing facility in bothell can rest assured that once the facility is fully functional, they too, will be casualties in the bristol myer acquisition.

    Advice to Management

dont be so passive aggressive in the company culture. it doesnt work.

    Pros

The people are who made it a great place to work. A small company atmosphere, which had a family quality to it. Hard working and dedicated employees. Benefits were great before they started downsizing.

    Cons

Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS) acquired ZymoGenetics back in 2010 and have made a lot of changes. Which now a scientist is not only doing thier regular job but also the job of HR, Accounting, Purchasing and IT by outsourcing admin jobs to India and the Philippines.

    Advice to Management

BMS should have taken the time to observe all the operations of ZymoGenetics. Decisions were made very quickly by separate towers/divisions and they never worked together as a team within BMS to see what was best for Zymo.

    Pros

Surrounded by great scientists who believe in what they do.
    Great location, promote work/life balance.
Good benefits, Challenging and rewarding work.

    Cons

Lack of communication between upper management and employees. No longer an independent biotech company. Exciting pipeline and research was decimated. Inconsistent promotion practices between departments.

    Advice to Management

Improve communication and reward all the hard work that is being done, even under extremely stressful circumstances.

    Cons

    poor management
    lack of clear goals
    poor sales of lead project

    Advice to Management

they need to dump their lead product by selling it off and then focus on their pipeline. Need to do a better job of hiring stars

    Pros

Great starting place with few years of expericence (usually from next door at Fred Hutch CRC). lots of chance to learn and grow. good benefits. location, location, location.

    Cons

project based layoff instead of merit based.

    Advice to Management

few positions in business side with unknown function

    Pros

    Great place to work at.

    Cons

If you're looking for a stable job, this isn't the time to go work for Zymo.

    Advice to Management

Don't forget your past employees when the market gets better. These are great scientists who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

    Pros

    1. Clear strength in early stage discovery of protein therapeutics. A good place to be a scientist.
    2. Very good benefits. Not sure if it is specific to Seattle and somewhat impacted by Boeing/Microsoft, but the Health Benefits are extremely generous.
    3. Everyone is very respectful.

    Cons

    1. Clear weakness in commercial/business of biotech.
    2. Lacking strong revenues to expand business. Recothrom sales to date have been lackluster- why not split the company between the future cash cow and the important new medicines of the future?
    3. This company needs some energy from the top down. The IPO buzz started fading circa 2003.

    Advice to Management

Hire more mid to senior level managers with histories of commercial success. Seattle has a history of mediocre Biotech- to truly shine Zymo needs to reach beyond the pool of people left behind by BMS, Immunex, ICOS, TGEN etc and recruit more talent from Amgen, Genentech, Biogen etc.
