I have been working at ikaSystems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

By far the best people I've ever worked with!
Lots of hard working people have put the company on a great path
Many company events and fun parties
    Great benefits
    Excellent environment
    Strong leadership and company future

    Cons

I wouldn't call it a con but it's definitely a fast paced environment. That's what you'd expect from a company that is really a startup as it's all new and launching new businesses. Great people doing great things so you don't mind working hard.

    Advice to Management

Heading in a great direction! Like all of the new improvements!!

I worked at ikaSystems full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Smart co-workers, decent pay and benefits. Parts of the executive leadership team realize that the organization needs to become more agile in its operations and more up-to-date in its technology stack.

    Cons

Complex, out-dated technology with myriad points of failure; high employee turnover has left company bereft of subject matter expertise; insanely demanding release frequency (point releases every two weeks or so) put incredible demands on the engineering, DBA, ops, and QA teams; inability to shake off red tape and all previously mentioned pressure points conspire to prevent the company from entering the 21st century agile world of software development despite heroic efforts by some.

    Advice to Management

This is a piece of advice to the management located in Lansing, Michigan (where Blue Cross of Michigan is headquartered): don't look to turn ikaSystems / Visiant into a cash cow in the next year or two, but make a long-term plan to modernize the company's technology infrastructure. This will require big investments, but that is the only way to make the company profitable in the long term.

I worked at ikaSystems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    some good colleagues; good location

    Cons

This is your place if: you want to work 70+ hours weekly; with no thanks and full blame for supporting applications with a paucity of server resources; and be blamed because Medicare regs for recoverability are not followed, though there is no security in place that has ever been followed - and if you know that your job will be sent to Mexico or India with only 2 weeks' notice and 2 weeks' pay and no recommendation from your manager so can get another job -- then surely try working there

    Advice to Management

Pls provide a better health plan - mine had a $3000 deductable for a single person

I have been working at ikaSystems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The company has been transforming itself and completely overhauling everything. I'm really glad to see the right decisions being made and some exciting changes happening. The new management team is excellent and putting in state of the art technology and processes. It's great to see the improvements and be a part of a growing company.

    Cons

The pace is fast and there is a lot to be done. However the people and the environment are a lot of fun so that balances out the demanding pace. It's basically a start up as they are re-doing everything which in my opinion is terrific!

    Advice to Management

Disregard the people who don't like change. Keep pushing ahead and challenging the people who are rooted to the past.

I have been working at ikaSystems full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Nice office and really nice people.
A lot of interesting initiatives underway designed to transform the company into a force to be reckoned with.
New executive leadership seems very competent and capable.
Good benefits and pay (including a nearly unheard of pension).
    Working on really important software.

    Cons

Still some work-life balance issues to work out.
Still some legacy processes and issues to fix.
Some old carryover poor cultural aspects still need to be addressed

    Advice to Management

    Keep driving towards positive transformation.
Continue to allow the company to behave like a software company and not an insurance company

I worked at ikaSystems full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -Location
    -Compensation
    -Growth Potential
-They know there are issues and they are trying to fix them.

    Cons

    -Constant Emergencies
    -Inability to stick with initiatives
    -Poor Work/Life Balance

There are a lot of good people trying to make ika better, but the organization does not have the discipline to see these initiatives through. I was there about a year and I witnessed many positive projects / transformations launch, make SOME progress, then get cancelled. The lack of commitment to these changes was professionally exhausting to many people unfortunately.

The organization does not do a good enough job managing its customers. At any given moment a customer could determine they didn't like the performance of a non production environment and it could be deemed an emergency that all kinds of staff have to work all hours to re-mediate. No advance notice, no planning or risk management -- just -- you have a downtime tonight and you HAVE to fix it.

In all honesty, I would have rated the company higher, maybe a 2, but there have been a spattering of positive review that I think might be dubious. I know many pro ika people who in all honesty would not rate ika a 5 star employer.

    Advice to Management

The company is working on a ground up transformation. In my time there this seems to be the most serious effort they have made to fix the considerable issues. Have the discipline to stick with this initiative.

Its time to manage the customers better. This paradigm destroys work life balance, you need to stand up for your people more courageously.
