Advocate Health CEO Eugene A. Woods was spotlighted on NBC’s Today show, profiling his business leadership, running the nation’s third-largest nonprofit health system, and how he balances that with his passion: writing and performing music. Veteran reporter Anne Thompson explored Gene’s upbringing and how he applies music to business – including how he was inspired by our teammates during the pandemic and how he was able to use his talents to energize and recognize those on the frontlines. Atrium Health teammates spent hundreds of hours volunteering at the Habitat for Humanity Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter work project in Charlotte, NC. With their help, nearly 40 new homes are going up in West Charlotte. A few years ago, Atrium Health made a $10 million dollar commitment to affordable housing initiatives in Charlotte because we know stable housing can lead to better health outcomes. Teammate recognition is integral to our organizational culture. The Atrium Health Good Catch Award rewards an act of detecting and preventing a potentially harmful event before it harms a patient, teammate or visitor. Connor, Cytogenetic Technologist I at Atrium Health, began working at Atrium Health following his chemistry degree at Appalachian State University. At first, Connor was unsure of how to turn his science degree into a career. During his junior year of college, he took the opportunity to tour labs at Atrium Health and gain a better understanding of each department. As an employer, Atrium Health creates a space where all belong by offering a wide array of learning opportunities that cater to our teammates’ strengths and interests. After one summer of shadowing teammates, Connor was offered a position in the Core Laboratory in Charlotte and began on-the-job training for his cytogeneticist certification. Not only did he immediately excel in this role, but he promptly received the Good Catch Award by discovering a rare chromosome abnormality during his entry training program. “I want to give the patient the best of my abilities to be able to ensure that their treatment is the best quality,” Connor said. Connor’s work at Atrium Health has allowed him to explore many sides of science, while also keeping the door open for further education. Live meaningfully at Atrium Health.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month is marked throughout October. This celebration’s history started decades ago in 1945 when Congress enacted Public Law 176, which birthed what we know today as the National Disability Employment Awareness Month (N.D.E.A.M). It was only for a week then and called National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. In 1962, the word ‘physically’ was removed to make the celebration inclusive of individuals with disabilities that were not physical. 26-years later, the celebrations were extended to a whole month by Congress and renamed National Disability Employment Awareness Month in 1988. Meet our Atrium Health Extern teammate, Mariel! After nine years of very different career paths in law enforcement and social work, Mariel discovered her passion for healthcare. She began to miss face-to-face interactions with others and the ability to really see her positive impact on the community, so she started taking classes to pursue her CNA while maintaining her social work. She ultimately moved to Charlotte, NC, to pursue her nursing degree at Central Piedmont Community College and join Atrium Health’s externship program. “I knew I wanted to work somewhere that has the newest technology, celebrates diversity, and has endless possibilities for career advancement,” she said. “I also heard about Atrium Health's student nurse scholar and nurse externship programs and wanted to take advantage of all the learning opportunities available.” Mariel is passionate about advocating for positive change in mental health and substance abuse issues. She has worked on the brain injury unit for the past year, and to her surprise, fell in love with it. Her journey to becoming a nurse is nothing short of unconventional, but her drive to help others is at the forefront of her career. Every day, she is empowered and impacted by the physical and mental strength of the people she cares for. She looks forward to continuing to care for her patients at Carolinas Rehabilitation Charlotte while finishing her last year of nursing school. Live meaningfully with Atrium Health.
