Married Best Buy employees beat unbelievable odds with kidney match. Shane and Leah Moss are a perfect match in more ways than one. The married couple works at Best Buy’s distribution center in Ardmore, Oklahoma. After Shane was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2018, he was in dire need of a transplant. Last December, he found a donor. “The second they told him he needed a kidney, I thought, ‘Well I have two, you can just have one of mine,’” Leah said. But the testing process to see if she was a match was complicated and long — and the chances of success were slim. “In total, I did like 27 different tests,” Leah said. “The odds of a match between husband and wife were like 1-in-75,000.” Yet, there was always that one chance. After six months of prayers, Shane and Leah received the results: They were a match. “I think we just sat there and cried and held each other. We were just so overwhelmed,” Leah said. “It was the best day.” If there’s such a thing as “meant to be,” Shane and Leah are it. Whether at home or work, they spend most of every day together. Virginia manager leads team with empathy, vulnerability. Those who have worked with general manager Tai Ngo describe him one of two ways. First, he knows how to go out and get results. Second, Tai’s colleagues bring up his passion for his team and his ability to make employees feel heard. Throughout his years at Best Buy, Tai’s stores have been recognized as top performers multiple times, and his leaders praise his employee-retention numbers. “His way delivering company-leading outcomes through employees has always been organic and really successful,” said Duc Dang, senior market director and Tai’s longtime mentor. While results are important, they don’t hold Tai back from leading his team with vulnerability. He shares his background and experiences to connect with others and show them that there’s more than one career path. “A lot of younger employees think I just inherited this job,” Tai said. “But I tell them, ‘I started hourly like you. I don’t have a college degree, but with Best Buy, there’s always an opportunity.’” Read the full story.

In trying times, employees lean on one another for support. The power of community is everything for Francis Lichauco. Every morning, he reaches out to his friends, family and Best Buy colleagues via text to share how he’s doing, quotes that motivate him and gratitude for the blessings in his life. “I like to think it inspires people, but they also inspire me with their support and compassion,” Francis said. An HR manager for omnichannel teams, Francis lives in California and began this morning ritual in March 2021 to connect with people during an isolating time. The COVID-19 pandemic was in full force, yet Francis had an additional challenge: He’d been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and had virtually no immune system. As he began to undergo chemotherapy treatment, he was confined to either his home with his family, or — due to hospital policies — alone at the Stanford Medical Center. “All I knew was that I had to fight,” he said. “My mental state helped me through it, I think. I wanted to let people know how I was doing and give them a little inspiration.”

The job was meant to be a temporary thing. She was looking for a full-time teaching position after graduating college with a teaching degree. However, Jessica soon learned she already had the teaching job she wanted by helping customers with technology and leading store teams. “I got to do what I intended to do, just not with kids,” she said. Throughout her Best Buy tenure, Jessica has held multiple leadership roles and worked for various locations in Wisconsin. Recently, she returned to the Menomonee Falls store but this time with a new title: General Manager. “I’m so excited to have my own building and build a strong, positive team culture like my own experience has been,” Jessica said. “It’s been amazing so far.”

Young boy’s wish comes true thanks to Massachusetts employees Brodie, a 12-year-old from Massachusetts, finds happiness in video games and watching movies with his younger brother as he battles leukemia. These two activities prompted him to make a wish: He wanted to have a shopping spree at his local Best Buy store. The Make-A-Wish® Foundation of Massachusetts and Rhode Island heard about Brodie’s request and went to work. “He very specifically wanted Best Buy, so, it was getting in touch with someone from the exact store then figuring out what’s possible,” said Hannah Arbuthnot, wish grantor, Make-A-Wish® Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Brodie’s wish was to have a 50-inch TV, Amazon fire tablet and a gaming chair that sits on the ground. It didn’t take long for the Make-A-Wish and Best Buy teams to make it come true.
