On International Women’s Day, we brought together about 15 daughters of Grab partner-drivers to our Marina One office for a UX learning workshop! By starting at a young age, we want to instil in them that engineering and technology don't hire based on gender, but what each individual has to offer. Here at Grab, we believe that by having more women in our workforce, it’s more than just sending a message of diversity and inclusion. What exactly does Grab do with the massive 10TB of data we get on a daily basis? This in-depth interview with Kong-wei Lye, Head of Data Science at Grab, tells you how we explore and make sense of it all. 1) The data at Grab isn't just used to match drivers-partners to passengers; it's also to optimise its usage and surface new models through machine learning. 2) Historical data is extremely valuable in crafting algorithms, but so is the ability to act on real-time data. 3) We are dedicated to our drivers: for example, we assist bike drivers by engaging them with jobs they might like to increase the probability of matching. 4) In the long term, this helps Grab to build models of SEA's road network and decrease congestion and pollution. 5) Each new service and market brings in new data points, which exponentially increase the complexity of how the data interacts.
