Austin Travis has been at Newport News Shipbuilding, A Division of HII, for seven years. He currently does the intricate and tricky work of a network electrician. “I’m the fiberoptic guy for our crew.” He also has ties to the US Navy, His grandfather and father served in the Navy and his father was stationed at NNS in the 80s, serving on the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN71). Travis spent his first year at NNS doing sea trials on CVN 71 and also had the opportunity to do the same on John F. Kennedy (CVN79). #BeyondtheBuild

After five years at Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, Brenda Ponce, a tool mechanic, can say her favorite thing about the shipyard, is the people. “I love the people. Everyone has a different personality, and it makes the world go around. We can laugh together, and I think you get better quality work because people are enjoying their jobs and each other.” She also gets gratification by supporting other shipbuilders and taking pride in her work. “I’m so proud to be helping other shipbuilders do their jobs. They need these tools on the deck plate, and I make sure that the tool quality is good. I want every tool to feel new when they use them.” What we create is powerful. HII’s Mission Technologies division hosted its sixth annual Global Day of Caring on Nov. 1, uniting more than 450 employees and family members for community service projects across the U.S. and in South Korea. Mission Technologies’ teams supported a wide range of causes — from food banks and environmental cleanups to military and veteran services. Their collective effort showcased HII’s values in action and the power of purpose-driven service. Participating U.S. locations included Alabama, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia and Washington. “Global Day of Caring remains a powerful way for our workforce to show up with purpose and respond to real community needs,” said Miranda Williams, Mission Technologies’ manager of organizational development, who has coordinated Global Day of Caring since its inception.
Guillermo Bez is a senior systems engineer at Mission Technologies, a division of HII, where he leads the Ground-Based Operational Surveillance System program. From managing the technical data package to identifying points of failure in design, Guillermo is committed to mission success while also being a mentor to others. He is also triathlete who recently competed with Team USA in the 2023 World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships in Hamburg, Germany. Bez, finished in 72nd place—third place of the USA delegation in his age group—with a time of 1 hour, 14 minutes and 10 seconds. What we build is powerful. Who builds it is extraordinary.
