Frank Raspante, a process improvements manager, has been at HII’s Mission Technologies for over 20 years. What shaped your early path to engineering? "I am a first generation born in the United States from an immigrant family. At a very young age I knew that the engineering world is where I was going. I grew up in a family of machinists and engineers that exposed me to the technical manufacturing environment at a very young age." Who inspires you? "My family has always been there to support me. I have found a side passion from our family history of farming, where I picked up and opened an effort to revive Cotuit Cranberry Farm on historical Cape Cod, a farm going back to approximately 1870. This experience allows me to mentor other individuals and give them a vision of balanced agriculture, technology, environmental law, and natural resources." What we create is powerful. Starting his shipbuilding journey as a helper apprentice 11 years ago, Aaron Alfred influences shipbuilders daily through his leadership roles. Now serving as a general foreman and shipfitter, he emphasizes the importance of tailoring communication and knowledge among the five different generations in the shipyard. “Putting people in positions to be successful is what the shipyard is all about,” said Aaron. “That’s what has made my job enjoyable throughout the years.” Through the daily hustle and bustle, shipbuilders can easily underestimate the magnitude of their purpose. However, Aaron wants all shipbuilders to understand the impact they have on our freedom. “Not everyone can do what we do on a daily basis and that’s something we can never take for granted,” said Aaron. “Ask questions, be engaged and learn everything you can to make the most out of your opportunities in the shipyard.” What we create is powerful. What we create is powerful. Who creates it is extraordinary. Dezmond Harrell didn’t expect to find his calling as a crane rigger and operator but over time has fallen in love with a career he is proud of at HII Newport News Shipbuilding. “I applied for the cranes thinking I would like it, but I’ve ended up loving it. I’ve enjoyed the work and the people out here. The people make the job what it is.” At HII, he understands the ships he helps build not only protect our nation, but carry real people, with real missions and that is why delivering quality matters. “My work matters because at the end of the day, lives are going to depend on these ships. We’ve got to put in quality work. It takes a lot of thought and planning to put these ships together. You can’t be complacent.” For Dezmond, being a shipbuilder isn’t just a job, it’s a mission that matters. #BeyondTheBuild #BuildIt https://hii.com/careers/
Achieving victory in modern aerial combat with the F-35 Lightning II demands more than just speed. Success in the skies requires high-fidelity virtual training, joint exercises and global teamwork to ensure mission readiness. In a recent demonstration of international cooperation, HII personnel at Nellis U.S. Air Force Base in Nevada, USA joined forces with F-35 pilots from the U.S. Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force for a coalition forces’ exercise in the Joint Simulation Environment (JSE). Deemed the U.S. Air Forces’ most hyper-realistic battlespace simulation ever, the JSE at the Joint Integrated Test and Training Center Nellis (JITTC-N) provides immersive battlespace training in a seamless, connected synthetic environment. HII is a key contractor in the software development, integration, support and operations of the JSE.
