Super cool stuff - with HII all over it. The U.S. Navy has confirmed a major milestone in undersea warfare: the successful forward-deployed launch and recovery of the Yellow Moray uncrewed underwater vehicle (UUV), a variant of HII’s REMUS 600, from the HII-built USS Delaware (SSN 791), a Virginia-class submarine. This marks the first-ever torpedo tube deployment and recovery of a UUV in support of a tactical mission. Conducted in the U.S. European Command theater, the operation involved three sorties lasting 6–10 hours each. No diver assistance was required demonstrating autonomous capability, mission endurance, and real-world utility. What we create is powerful. Who creates it is extraordinary. In 2010, Lanetta Fantroy, test engineer, was a single mother of four, part of a family with a deep tradition in shipbuilding. Fast forward 15 years, not only did she follow in her family’s footsteps, two of her children now work at Ingalls Shipbuilding, a Division of HII, and another one serves in the US Navy on an Ingalls-built ship. Finding a greater sense of purpose in her role of delivering a quality ship for our nation and being a generational shipbuilder, Lanetta helps to ensure operating systems aboard all vessels are world-class. Thanks for what you do, Lanetta! #beyondthebuild #buildit
In honor of National Apprenticeship Day on April 30, we highlighted the thousands of HII apprentices who are helping build the most advanced ships and technologies for our national security. National Apprenticeship Day is a nationwide celebration established by the U.S. Department of Labor to recognize the importance of connecting individuals to meaningful careers and assisting employers in building a skilled workforce. This year National Apprenticeship Day moved to the spring, with its traditional weeklong celebration to resume in 2026.
HII announced today that the Virginia-class shipbuilding team, which includes the company’s Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division, has been awarded a contract modification in support of construction of two fiscal year 2024 Block V submarines. The contract modification, to NNS and teaming partner General Dynamics Electric Boat, authorizes construction of the 11th and 12th fast-attack submarines of the Block V contract. “We appreciate the teamwork that resulted in these critical national security assets being put under contract,” said Jason Ward, NNS vice president of submarine construction. “We understand the advantage Virginia-class submarines bring to the sailors who operate them, and our shipbuilders are working with diligence to deliver them to the fleet.” NNS and GDEB have built and delivered 24 Virginia-class submarines to date.
HII was recognized a second year in a row as one of top companies in the country for its exemplary commitment to advancing employee wellbeing through comprehensive and innovative benefits and initiatives. “These incredible workers are not just building ships, they’re building our future, securing our way of life, and ensuring peace through strength.” HII hosted the secretary of the Navy at its Newport News Shipbuilding division for a tour of the shipyard, meetings with company leadership, and direct interactions with shipbuilders and sailors. It was the first visit to NNS by Secretary of the Navy John Phelan since confirmation to the position in March. “The work being done in Newport News is essential to American seapower,” Phelan said. “These incredible workers are not just building ships, they’re building our future, securing our way of life, and ensuring peace through strength.” “We are honored to have Secretary Phelan in the shipyard and show him what our shipbuilders do,” NNS President Kari Wilkinson said. “Shipbuilding is complex and difficult work and requires a commitment to purpose. We appreciate Secretary Phelan’s leadership, perspective and insight as we work relentlessly to be strong partners in strengthening and expanding American shipbuilding.” Read more in the HII Newsroom: https://hii.com/news/hii-hosts-secretary-of-the-navy-at-newport-news-shipbuilding/

We're excited for all the ways cutting edge tech is integrated even into training and development at HII. The new facility makes it easier and safer for welders to hone their skills, and enhance HII’s ability to grow the number of proficient shipbuilders with this essential skillset. “As we develop the shipbuilders who build our nation’s ships, our training programs are a key part of that effort,” Ingalls Shipbuilding Vice President of Operations Donny Dorsey said. “By working with the Navy and our regional workforce partners, we can provide individuals in Mississippi with a more comprehensive approach to mastering a skilled trade in shipbuilding.” This new facility integrates VR technology into the shipyard’s existing welder certification curriculum, providing new and current Ingalls shipbuilders with an immersive, hands-on experience to develop critical shipbuilding skills.
“HII is committed to increasing build rates for our Navy customer, and this investment in capacity alongside the Navy will help us do that,” HII President and CEO Chris Kastner said. “It lets us efficiently add trained talent and state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities to the urgent job of building ships, making it a unique opportunity to accelerate throughput at Newport News Shipbuilding in support of the Navy and AUKUS.” Full story here: https://hii.com/news/hii-expands-shipbuilding-capacity-announcing-intent-to-acquire-south-carolina-advanced-metal-fabricator-assets-and-workforce/
