This February we recognize American Heart Month, a time when Healthfirst educates members about Cardiovascular and Heart Disease. Today, we’re highlighting a member of the Healthfirst team who helps keep our members healthy. This week, meet Maria Julia Perdomo, a Care Manager at Healthfirst. How does your role at Healthfirst support cardiovascular health of Healthfirst members? In my role as Care Manager, I have a recurring opportunity to talk to my members about cardiovascular health. One of the most impactful actions we can do is educate our members about preventative care, specifically about cardiovascular diseases and the actions that our members can take to mitigate the risk of development, or for early detection and appropriate treatment. We, Care Managers, are the members' source for quick access to information, tools, tips, and we are also equipped with the knowledge to guide them on their questions and goals to continuously improve their health.
Healthfirst and One Hundred Black Men of New York have joined forces to develop leaders, create opportunities for economic empowerment, promote social justice, and help close health equity gaps. The collaboration will help young people build skills and find career paths that let them be ambassadors for more equitable access to health education and preventive care.
Healthfirst, one of New York’s largest not-for-profit health insurance companies, and TeamSnap, home to the largest community for everything youth sports, are proud to announce that they have teamed up to make youth sports more accessible and to promote the benefits of physical activity for the overall health and wellness of children. To that end, Healthfirst will sponsor 25 local youth sports leagues—including soccer, baseball, football, and basketball teams—and fund 67 youth sports scholarships. As an exclusive health partner for selected youth leagues each season, Healthfirst will reach more than 11,000 children. Healthfirst branding will appear on athletes’ jerseys and on event signage, and the company will appear at select events educating the community about their health insurance coverage options. More than 40% of the investment Healthfirst has made goes back to the local community by helping to make youth sports more accessible to thousands of young families and equitable for all. Funds are spent on equipment, jerseys, umpires’ fees, travel expenses, field maintenance, and more.
