“ripe af plz thx” We took a look at 7 years of avocado data and about a million lines of customer avo shopping instructions and uncovered a wacky look at our customers’ idiosyncrasies when it comes to the famously fickle fruit. In short: folks REALLY care about getting perfect avocados. 🥑
"A recipe is just a simple program where you take a bunch of inputs, put them through a processor, and you get some sort of output. My decade of practice cooking made coding really obvious." Hear from Muffy Barkocy, Sr Software Engineer, about the connection between cooking and coding, the benefit of a simple (but delicious) recipe when it comes to both, and why she loves working at Instacart (spoiler: it may or may not be because so many of us love to cook...and eat!) Bonus: this article also contains three of Muffy's favorite recipes...and we highly recommend you try out the "strangely addictive cheese poofs." 🧀
"Instacart is basically my extended family at this point. The day I started with Instacart I remember walking in and seeing the other green shirt person, and I’m still in touch with her to this day. Some of my very best friends I met through Instacart, whether they still work with us or have moved on. Now that I’m a site manager, I also work closely with the area managers and other people in the company, and it’s really like a family.” 🥕 Check out Emily’s full interview in our the latest edition of “10 Items or Less!”
Wow, what a month June was! Our Rainbow Carrots ERG (employee resource group) brought to life a packed schedule of events and touchpoints to celebrate the history, resiliency, and vibrancy of the LGBTQ+ community. The programming also supported and drove impact for those facing food insecurity within the communities in which we operate. Huge shout-out to our Rainbow Carrots and all of the employees who helped us celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. We appreciate y'all so much. Check out the full recap below 👇
We give customers a lot of fulfillment options to choose from as they place an order . More options add complexity to a fulfillment chain, and more complexity can lead to efficiency loss… unless you measure where your gaps are. One gap that’s been notoriously hard for us to measure is lost demand. So how did we go about estimating and understanding out lost demand? We built a Machine Learning model that spots the orders we could be fulfilling but are missing out on due to a lack of fulfillment options. It's 103º in Atlanta. How many grocery orders containing a rotisserie chicken and a cold pint of strawberry ice cream can you deliver in an hour before they start to melt? What happens if there's a flash thunderstorm on top of it? Those are the riddles that Kevin Henrikson and JJ Zhuang are working on solving as the VPs of Instacart's fulfillment engineering organization. This includes the teams that lead the engineering infrastructure, mobile, machine learning, data science, and operations research engineers that build our Shopper app (iOS and Android) and our last mile logistics technologies.
