“Prior to Facebook, my career took me through four acquisitions and one bankruptcy. I viewed all of those changes as an opportunity to learn. Each had its own set of challenges, and I lived in five countries as a result. Now that I’m at Facebook London, I love to explore and learn about this amazing city—the culture inside Facebook and outside the door is so special. I’m also a huge fan of board games and own a couple hundred. When I’m not at work, you can find me with friends and family, playing everything from Feast for Odin to Innovation. When I retire, I really want to make a board game. I know it’ll be difficult but there’s nothing better than a good challenge. “In my 50s I decided to pursue something different in my career. I had worked at semiconductor startups that had varying degrees of success, so I knew I wanted to be part of a larger company with an established structure, more resources and a sense of purpose. In 2017 I joined Facebook to help manage and scale the AR/VR team in Cork. I was astounded by the diversity of people, the ambition and genuine excitement to take on challenges. Research scientists on my team are architects who design microscopically small devices containing features just one millionth of a meter in size. We put these devices together to create display components for AR & VR products. I aim to provide ‘pastoral care’ by ensuring team members have what they need to be effective, and guide them along their career paths. I continue to be surprised at how Facebook is a leader of tech developments with some of the top experts in the world. And yet, the culture here feels like family.
