When a nationwide center has declared your nursing care among the best of the best, getting even better means clearing a very high bar. Leslie Robbins and DeShuna Dickens aim to prove Novant Health is doing exactly that. They're co-leaders of a program that has brought the nation's top nursing honor to Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte and Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. The two Novant Health hospitals — and by extension, smaller ones under their umbrella — are among fewer than 10% nationwide recognized as Magnet hospitals by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Just 591 of the nation's 6,093 hospitals have attained Magnet status. "It's not something that's required of us to do, but it shows that you're invested in your nurses and interdisciplinary care teams that take care of your patients," Robbins said. Simply put, the designation recognizes innovative nursing practices and outstanding patient care.
Interested in health care? This entry-level position might be for you. Care assistants allow nurses to spend more time with patients. Nationwide staffing shortages have required weary nurses across America to do everything from CPR and dressing wounds to making beds and taking out the trash. At Novant Health, help is on the way. A newly created entry-level position — care associate — aims to make sure nurses aren't saddled with tasks that take them away from skilled patient care. "It will give nurses more time to spend with their patients, more time to complete their assessments and documentation, more time to pass meds," said Richard Coffy, interim nurse manager on the stroke and neuroscience unit at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte. With specific duties built into their job description, care associates should decrease the burden on registered nurses and help prevent burnout. Novant Health has adopted Working Well, a long-term work approach that provides flexibility for our team members while continuing to care for our patients and ensuring excellence in our daily operations. The approach to hybrid work must be at the forefront of every organization’s talent strategy as we consider life beyond the pandemic. Hybrid work models will be the default by 2024, and that over half of work will be performed offsite. 100% of the respondents of the survey indicated that hybrid work will help to attract younger talent. Organizations that champion this environment and degree of flexibility in the way they work will see greater success in attracting and retaining talent going forward. This work approach focuses on three pillars: well-being for our team members, wellness for our patients and communities, and being well-suited for the work we do. Our leaders will develop creative solutions and flexibility for both clinical and non-clinical team members.
