“Inclusion is part of who we are.” - OhioHealth President and CEO Stephen Markovich, MD. Today, we wrap OhioHealth Unity Week — a multi-day, internal celebration that highlights how our organization puts inclusion into action. The week offered both in-person and virtual opportunities for associates to learn, connect and explore how creating space for every voice strengthens our vision of providing exceptional care for all. Dr. Markovich opened the event by sharing how inclusion and belonging are part of the foundation of patient care. “We want to meet patients where they are,” he said. “They want to be seen, heard and valued.” Associates engaged with our Business Resource Groups (BRG) and Inclusion Council, and reflected on how diverse perspectives translate to meaningful experiences across the system. A highlight of the schedule was the Unity Week Celebration, featuring spoken word performances, music, storytelling and more. Our commitment to inclusion and belonging is grounded in our values and brought to life each day by associates who make OhioHealth a place where everyone feels welcome.
At OhioHealth, leadership in nursing isn’t just a title, it’s a mindset. The OhioHealth Nurse Leader Development Program shapes nurses at every stage of their careers to embrace leadership, whether they are at the bedside, in administration or beyond. Edwin Clark’s, MSN, RN, path to becoming a clinical nurse manager started behind a coffee counter. While working as a barista at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital, he befriended orthopedic nurse practitioners, sparking his interest in nursing. After earning his degree, Clark gained experience in stroke care, the operating room and neuro-critical care – where he discovered his passion for leadership. From there, our Nurse Leader Connect Program and education benefits helped him develop key skills to take on his current role. “My goal is to help be part of a team that fosters a supportive environment for associates,” Clark said. “If the associates are supported, they will feel more satisfaction with their work and they will want to continue to provide the best care that they can to our patients.” His advice for other nurses? Communicate your goals, seek mentorship and embrace new opportunities. “Leading at OhioHealth means that you are setting an example for others. You are working to foster the best environment for your colleagues and your patients.” Read more about the paths our nurses can take to grow their careers below.

Yesterday, more than a hundred of care site leaders, clinical staff and advisory council members came together for the third annual OhioHealth Rural Health Symposium. It’s a time for our organization to reflect on the current state and future challenges of maintaining local care in the state’s rural communities. This year’s event focused on sharing the OhioHealth Rural Health whitepaper – which outlines disparities in rural areas and proposes strategies to enhance access, care delivery and workforce development. From there, a panel discussion and breakout sessions dived further into implementing these strategies locally.

Leadership lessons can be found all around us, especially in the sports and entertainment industry. That was a key focus of yesterday’s OhioHealth Leadership Briefing (OLB) – a day where we bring together our leaders from across the healthcare system to connect, celebrate and learn. In a dynamic conversation moderated by Columbus Blue Jackets' TV color analyst and team ambassador Jody Shelley, Columbus Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell and Columbus Crew GM Issa Tall shared powerful insights about leading teams, shaping culture and serving the customer. Memorable takeaways included: + You don’t need a certain title to be a leader. + The first interaction with your customer is the most important – so view your staff as jigsaw puzzle where each piece is equally important to completing that puzzle. This human-centered leadership approach is best for not only your people, but the customer. + It’s critical to build a culture that supersedes language barriers, draws strength by listening to its people and delivers the same respect and recognition to associates no matter their tenure. + Identify when you should pass on talent. When someone is not a culture fit, seek another candidate who will be a better team player.
