Exciting news! One Medical and Amazon Prime are partnering to make it easier to access high-quality primary care.
The biggest potential for Amazon Health and One Medical to "move the needle" in healthcare is to leverage its care model combined with tech to tackle the burden of chronic diseases in the U.S., according to Diamond. "A great example is cardiovascular disease, the No. 1 killer in the U.S. It is largely preventable. If we can modify the key behaviors to get people to manage their high blood pressure, treat their diabetes or avoid diabetes, we could unseat cardiovascular disease as the No. 1 killer in the United States," he said. "We're already sending people on that trajectory. If we do that at a greater scale as part of Amazon, if we apply Amazon's technology to help us understand when we should intervene, if we can better model risk and intervene on higher-risk individuals in more thoughtful ways and doing that at scale, we will unseat heart disease as the number one cause of death."

At One Medical, we’ve been offering paid four-week sabbaticals after five years to employees since 2013 — allowing our team members to grow in both their personal and professional lives. Employees have used the time to do everything from travel, learn a new language, spend time with family, or even just pick up a new hobby. Recruiting coordinator Sarah Blackburn, for instance, spent her sabbatical traveling solo throughout the West Coast. During her time off, Sarah visited eight national parks and four cities across California, Oregon, and Washington. Here’s what Sarah had to say about her sabbatical: “During my sabbatical I learned to enjoy spending time alone with my thoughts and to take pleasure from the simple things. Walking through the sequoia trees in Sequoia National Park and Kings Canyon was one of the most memorable parts of my trips. There’s something inspiring about walking among trees that are 3,000 years old. My sabbatical helped me learn how to do a lot with very little. I had to pack light for a month on the road, so I didn't always have many resources to utilize. I had to get creative with my approach to things and that's a valuable skill in any job.”
When Kris Lewis joined One Medical to launch our diagnostic sonography program, she was excited to use both her business acumen and clinical knowledge to build something new. The in-house program allows ultrasound techs to be an active part of the care team, which benefits both tech and patients. As we expand this vital service, we are looking for more sonographers. At One Medical, we’ve been offering paid four-week sabbaticals every five years to employees since 2013 — allowing our team members to grow in both their personal and professional lives. Employees have used the time to do everything from travel, learn a new language, spend time with family, or even just pick up a new hobby. Senior Program Manager Jenn Routt, for instance, spent her sabbatical traveling outside of North America for the first time. During her time off, Jenn traveled to London, Edinburgh, Paris, and Amsterdam — all cities she’s dreamed of visiting since she was a kid. Here’s what Jenn had to say about her sabbatical: “I was nervous going into the trip because my partner and I organized it completely by ourselves. I was worried about the many travel transitions and wasn't even sure I’d be able to learn different subway systems in these new countries. I conquered my fear and ended up taking more public transportation than I have taken in over a decade. It boosted my self-confidence and reminded me about the value of change. Sometimes we get comfortable using a particular workflow or process at work and think, ‘If it works, why would we change things?’ But when we take time to think about process improvement, we realize there’s almost always a way to be more efficient by doing something different.”
Niharika Mehrotra, DO, knew that completing her residency was only the start of her life-long journey of developing her expertise as a primary care provider. One of the things that attracted her to One Medical was the physician-centered culture that puts an emphasis on learning at all levels, along with the collaborative team-based environment where she feels supported. Interested in hearing how we are supporting physicians at every stage of their career? We’ll be at the American Academy of Family Physicians National Conference for Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students in July. Stop by booth #1314 to learn more!
