Expanding broadband access on Wisconsin's Menominee Indian Reservation is part of Spectrum's commitment to keeping customers connected. The Menominee Indian Reservation is home to generations of Kim Komanekin's family. Until recently, access to high-speed broadband eluded the Komanekin family. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted this disparity, driving tribal leaders to reach out to Spectrum for help to expand the network to more than 200 underserved rural homes across 27 miles using Federal CARES Act Funding. Spectrum is proud to be part of Path Forward’s Return to Work program, which is a 16 week paid returnship for experienced professionals returning to the workforce after taking time off for caregiving. This program offers candidates the chance to revamp skills, update resumes with new experience, and build strong connections with others transitioning back to the workforce. The program is open to individuals who have at least 5 years of professional experience and have been out of the paid workforce for at least two years.
In 2020, we announced our inaugural class of Spectrum Scholars, a two-year educational and mentorship initiative for underrepresented college students with financial need. Now, we're looking for our next group of Scholars. The program is in keeping with Spectrum’s ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion and service of local communities. Twenty students will be awarded a $20,000 college scholarship to be used over the course of their junior and senior years. Scholars will also receive a Spectrum mentor and the opportunity to explore an internship at Spectrum. Research shows that mentorship can play an important role in creating an inclusive work environment and professional development. That’s why at Spectrum, we provide informal networking and mentoring programs through our Business Resource Groups. “Mentees are able to truly ‘pick the brains’ of their mentors, and to learn from their experiences and how to apply that to their own career paths,” says Kate Belfiglio, Director of Marketing & Creative Strategy and lead of the Spectrum Women Mentor Program. In 2021, through our Business Resource Group mentoring programs, we connected over 170 mentorship pairs and logged over 1,000 total mentorship hours.
