What are sales commissions like at American Express?

      Good Commission Structure

      Senior business consultant
      Former employee
      Sunrise, FL
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Good base pay combined with commission pay if you meet your minimum goals, benefits and other perks are great.

      Cons

Expect favoritism and uncomfortable office politics, if you are struggling no one will help you.

      1

      Good but can be stressful

      Travel and lifestyle consultant
      Former employee
      Brighton, England
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Office is nice, free food etc, work colleagues are mostly nice, free travel stays, commission bonuses paid monthly, you get a good understanding of lux travel, other companies like to see Amex on your CV. The training course at the beginning of employment is good. Good community network.

      Cons

Survey rankings are tough, shift patterns are tough, highly competitive to rank in the top otherwise you get a bad shift pattern for 8 weeks. It's great when you do well, but a few mistakes can cost you. People steal bookings a lot, which hurts commission, especially when you've done all the work for the booking. You will be spoken to badly by other teams such as centurion and specialist travel.

      Cons

      Nothing that comes to mind

      Centurion relationship manager
      Former employee
      Hong Kong
      Recommend

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      Good welfare. Work from home

      Cons

      Low pay, no quarterly commission

Great Earning Potential and Flexibility, but Challenging Sales Cycles

      Business development executive
      Current employee
      Toronto, ON
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Pros: Uncapped commissions with strong earning potential — hitting 100% to target pays just over $100K (before tax), and 150% to target can reach around $160K total. Base salary + commission structure is fair and motivating for high performers. Stock options and profit-sharing match provide excellent long-term incentives. Comprehensive benefits package (health, dental, vision, etc.). Flexible hybrid schedule: typically 3 days in office, 2 from home, with the opportunity to earn more WFH days based on performance. Strong brand reputation and supportive peers who make collaboration enjoyable. Great culture. Range of age groups but has lots of young adults and lots of willingness to help one another.

      Cons

Cons: Full end-to-end sales cycle — from prospecting to closing — can be demanding and time-intensive. Economic conditions can directly impact credit approvals and spending limits, making it harder to hit goals in slower markets. Performance-driven environment; not ideal for those who prefer a steady pace or dislike rejection. Targets always increasing so technically always having to work harder for same commission payout (based on percentage to target).

      Micromanaged, Undervalued, and Disposable

      Sbs sales
      Former employee
      Sunrise, FL
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Coworkers – The people on your team can be supportive and make the workday more tolerable. Hybrid schedule – Some flexibility with working from home a few days a week. 401(k) plan – The benefits package is decent, particularly the retirement plan.

      Cons

Extreme compliance and micromanagement – Every call is monitored, rules are enforced inconsistently across departments, and even minor mistakes can land you on a disciplinary “level”. Unrealistic expectations and constant pressure – Leadership openly demands perfection, and sales goals are structured so you feel forced to push products just to survive. Lack of transparency and job security – Termination decisions come with zero warning, investigations dig back months, and favoritism dictates who gets leniency. Highly political environment – Kiss up to directors and you’re fine; otherwise, you’re disposable and micromanaged. Stressful and unstable compensation – Pay and commission change frequently and rarely in your favor, making the 401(k) and hybrid schedule the only real positives.

      Pros

Great company to work for especially if you utilize the opportunity wisely, Use the benefits, save a portion of your commission etc

      Cons

Not all perks are provided immediately after changing depts, some TLs shouldn't be TL's. Know your employee rights and don't be afraid of going to HR when needed.
