What is the hiring process like at Bain & Company?

      Bain & Company reviews

      Good pay, poor experience

      Consultant
      Current employee
      Brussels
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

The salary is good for the location

      Cons

Hours are bad; performance review process is bad; the company plays favorites with people; career opportunities are limited to their areas of expertise (mainly private equity); limited number of clients; commitment to sustainability is laughable; there is no diversity; poor staffing opportunities will be held against you

      Good work

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      Good work environment, Amenities, location

      Cons

Interview process was very long and hectic

      Good culture but no projects

      Business Outlook

      Pros

The value that MBB provides is very true. You'll get to work with top CEOs and on amazing projects. Exit options are really great with a good pedigree.

      Cons

Horrible hiring practice. I had the fortune of working with MBA interns who were exceptional. Neither of them received an offer, despite our team pushing hard for them to return back to the firm. The partner on the project has no say on hiring here, all of it lies with a central team. Funnily, the central team messed up the hiring so bad that this year Bain didn't hire anyone in final placements because of over-hiring in the previous years. Let me elaborate. Bain India is losing clients left and right with a limited pipeline except for PEG (private equity practice) and these geniuses decided to hire as much as BCG did just to be competitive with no understanding that BCG's revenue is atleast 2x of Bain. People who were supposed to join in 2023 are joining in 2024 because of this and the promotion percentage has been abysmal. I have been forced to say goodbye to so many colleagues who would have received promotions in a fair market but over-hiring has messed up their chances (Yes, up-or-out still exists in MBB). Many of my colleagues are still on bench including experienced consultants with great ratings.

Great people but culture erosion from covid overhiring

      Consultant
      Former employee

      Business Outlook

      Pros

great training and focus on talent development

      Cons

covid lateral hiring has eroded the culture - many senior leadership got airdropped from other firms that do not have a grasp on bain's internal culture.

      Good for temporary stay

      Associate consultant
      Current employee
      Brussels
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - amazing, kind, smart and supportive people - strong learning curve

      Cons

      - long working hours - up-or-out culture resulting in a lot of pressure (weekly performance reviewing etc.) - internal politics on staffing - decreasing diversity - strong dependence to macro-economic situation - less and less budgets resulting in less office fun and benefits such as language courses - much tougher for expats and experienced hires - very limited transparency on staffing, reviewing process and many other processes

      It's all about culture

      Associate consultant
      Former employee
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Lots of resources and very particular culture, with pros and cons. Constant feedback and push for continous improvement were what stood out the most for me as a plus.

      Cons

It felt that to fit in making "working at bain" a core part of your identity was necessary. Silent expactation is for non-work life to become very involved with that of your co-workers.

Great place for learning but it has its downside

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great benefits unparalleled by other industries; a great place to learn and develop skillsets

      Cons

Doesn’t do formal layoffs so push people out aggressively when the business is slow.. have left many with bitter taste.. the review process has room for improvement

      Abusive and Unproductive Work Environment

      Technology solutions group
      Current employee
      Boston, MA
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Great benefits and compensation overall - Specialized teams - Once in a while office event - Affinity groups try to do more things here than at any other place I've worked at in the past

      Cons

      - Consistent poor planning from Leadership Team and business - Poor alignment and communication among departments and between stakeholders - Extremely toxic environments where people are so stressed and confused in so much chaos at times that they recur to throw others under the bus and make no hesitation when it comes to complaining about every little thing while bringing down others along the way with them - Very little to no recognition for all the efforts made including constantly approving exceptions that mean rushing for our teams and dropping everything, and for extremely demanding work done despite on time delivery and high quality work delivered consistently - Lack of clear expectations from day one (and you would still be responsible and at fault for this) - Lack of role clarity from day one and only gets worse (and you would still be responsible and at fault for this, and affected in your performance reviews despite not being your fault.) - People will take things away from you that you own and then use it against you as not taking enough ownership or prioritizing properly - people will overstep your role and act as your manager when they are not. - Hiring freeze now for 2+ years, teams constantly overwhelmed and stretched out. Compensation merit increases being severely affected by firm performance despite having double digit profit % increases over the year. Completely reckless and inconsiderate from management. Be warned, this is a very intense job but for all the wrong reasons, and can be miserable at times with very long hours as you navigate all the noise and chaos coming from all directions. My recommendation if you still want to try out Bain as a company is to perhaps look at other areas outside of Technology Solutions Group (TSG) but in the end, the issue seems more widespread than our teams / department in some of the concerning areas as stakeholders are already in another department and they are actually the main perpetrators of our most miserable days at work.

      Reason for returning to therapy

      Technology solutions group
      Former employee

      Recommend

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Prestigious brand - Smart people - Convenient office location

      Cons

Management: lacked transparency and honesty, failure to deliver what was promised during hiring, provided insufficient training and support, unclear and ever-changing expectations, inability to cultivate a collaborative team culture Culture (or the lack of): you're treated as a second-class citizen if you're in a non-consulting role. I wouldn't recommend Bain for individuals seeking growth opportunities in the tech space. The platform is outdated and underfunded. The actual outcomes achieved fall far short of the extensive discussions and PowerPoint presentations made.
