Thank you for your review and feedback. We're really pleased to see that you enjoy the variety in your work and that you appreciate both the progressive people policies and the benefits we offer at Co-op. We recommend speaking to your manager about any amendments that can be made to support a better work-life balance for you.

My experience working for the Co-op (Night worker)

      Retail worker
      Current employee
      Botley, England
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

I have been working as a part-time employee at the Co-op for a few months. I work one night and one late evening per week on a 12 hour contract. If it weren't for the Co-op selling off many petrol stations, I would continue to work there. The work is steady, reliable and easy. I know I can't speak for every Co-op, but my colleagues are friendly and often work can feel like more of a social event than a chore. The managers are very reasonable. They want the work done to a good standard, but as long as that is fulfilled they won't nit-pick about how it's done (provided policies are followed). My store manager is also very reasonable, and he puts genuine effort into ensuring that everyone is doing well. The pay is fair for the work, and the benefits are helpful. Their free healthcare benefit is probably my favourite, being able to call up a doctor without going through the NHS can save a lot of time with less serious issues.

      Cons

I haven't worked in enough retail places to point out cons about the Co-op.

Good culture if you're in a good team

      Anonymous employee
      Current employee
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Very good benefits and if you're in a team with a good manager the culture is second to none with a lot of flexibility. The support centre has some amazing people who genuinely care

      Cons

If you have a bad manager you can't access the company culture and no matter how often the manager is complained about nothing will ever happen. Senior managers know who the toxic people are but are either unwilling or unable to do anything about it, so they operate with impunity. Workload is also very high and pay relatively low compared to other retailer support centres

Thank you for your review and feedback. While we recognise that there are varying management styles within Co-op, you should not feel that you are excluded in anyway. Please speak up about your concerns, you can ask Bobbi on MyHR for more information on where to turn to for help and support.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We’re really pleased to hear you found the flexibility and benefits valuable during your time with us. We also appreciate your honesty about the role feeling repetitive and lacking progression. Retail roles can sometimes become routine, and your feedback helps highlight where we can do better. We’re actively working to make day‑to‑day tasks more engaging, for example, by offering colleagues more variety across different areas of the store, introducing short micro‑learning opportunities to broaden skills, and improving scheduling tools so people have more control over their working patterns. For those who want to develop further, we’re also creating clearer pathways through shadowing and “step‑up” opportunities. Thanks again for sharing your experience.
