What is paid time off like at Heartland Dental?

Pros

I’ve been a practicing hygienist for over 15 years now. Five of those years have been with Heartland Dental. I was very skeptical when my dentist decided to affiliate and sell his practice to Heartland Dental years ago. I read all the negative reviews online and didn’t hear very many positives. Over the past five years, Heartland has been great to my family and I. The company has invested in my co-workers and I with nice continuing education classes all over the U.S. However, the thing that I am most proud of is how this company has taken care of their employees during the recent COVID 19 pandemic. They have and continue to go above and beyond to take care of their employees so we do not have to go without pay. I know how fortunate I am because I have seen many of my colleagues in private practice be sent home without any pay or PTO time issued to them. Thank you Heartland Dental for valuing your employees and our families!!

Does Heartland Dental offer relocation assistance?

Pros

I've worked for private practice and other DSO's, but this place takes the cake. I've been with the company almost 10 years and still love what I do. The opportunity to grow is continual and the culture is outstanding. I'm not saying all 10 years have been easy, but the ones who made it miserable didn't last long. The company truly does care about their employees. While it's unrealistic to think you'll never get a poor manager/doctor/team member/etc., the company uses an array of resources for you to reach out if it becomes unbearable. I've been under some poor management while employed here, but most of those individuals are gone and I'm still here. It's comforting to know the company has your back and truly wants to employ NICE people. The region I'm in now is absolutely amazing and I plan on being here at least another 10 years.

Cons

We have a competitive benefits package, but I wish we had matching 401k. The doctors have a great opportunity for investment, so I'd like to see something better for the individuals who've been here awhile and want to stay.

Advice to Management

They already offer anonymous surveys periodically, so I appreciate the opportunity to give feedback constantly.

Does Heartland Dental offer dental insurance?

Pros

Great coworkers, great culture - I learn a ton and will continue to do so. Best part of the job is being able to work together as a team and apply my skills. There is also an option to WFH, which is great for many remote teams. Schedule is pretty lax.

Cons

Benefits can - and should - be better. While a discount on dental (duh) is provided, overall benefits are mediocre and are outclassed by other companies (minimum 2 weeks PTO, not counting sick time, NO 401k matching, average health and vision benefits, no tuition reimbursement, etc. But, hey, you get to participate in the stock plan, that's enough, right?) You also have to "drink the Kool-Aid", or at least pretend to, to fit in entirely. Hard to "move up" if you don't! Sometimes things can get stressful because of the lack of people on teams. Great place to get experience under your belt, but growth here is stagnant.

Advice to Management

If someone has a serious and valid issue with another employee - take it seriously! There were plenty times when a person of higher authority (or manager) disregarded a coworker's concerns, and that ends up creating friction in teams. If I could choose ONE thing to change immediately, it would be to hire replacements/backfills as soon as possible. There is a common trend where someone essential will leave the company and the position is not filled for months - or not at all. If Heartland truly wishes to be a "world class" company, they need to start having a detailed plan to rehire, provide better benefits, and more flexible PTO. It also depends on your position - if you're in a lower position, you are more likely to be passed over for raises/bonuses/reimbursement for certs or school. It's almost embarrassing listening to other friends in this field and hearing about their benefits. It's 2022 - the job market is shifting and the bar has been raised.

Does Heartland Dental offer family leave?

Pros

Great work environment, systems that work, I have met amazing people, and overall culture is good.

Cons

No 401k matching, no sick pay, only two weeks of pto until you have been there for 7 years, and then you get three, no paid maternity leave for a company that is female dominant, compensation doesn’t align with job duties, and value. Only 3% raise every year.

Advice to Management

Studies have shown that valuing your employees actually creates more profits for your business. Value them with competitive pay, more time with their families, security in their retirement fund, not having to choose between a much needed vacation, and staying home with your sick children. We can and should take amazing care of our patients, and amazing care of each other.
