Pros
Despite the challenges, there are some benefits to working at MGM. The company’s name carries weight and can enhance your resume, providing value in future career opportunities. Additionally, employees sometimes enjoy perks such as tickets to events.
Cons
I do not recommend MGM as a place to build a long-term career. While the company might offer initial opportunities, the challenges and limitations make it difficult to sustain professional growth and job satisfaction over the long term.
(1) One of the main drawbacks of working at MGM is the compensation. The pay is notably below industry standards, with opportunities elsewhere easily offering $30,000 to $50,000 more.
(2) Professional development at MGM is mostly disappointing. The company tends to favor external candidates over long-serving internal employees, even when the latter are more qualified. An exception is often made for relatives of high-ranking leaders, who advance rapidly due to nepotism, which undermines the efforts of dedicated internal staff. Look up the President of The Cosmopolitan.
(3) The company culture is highly hierarchical. Senior leaders operate in palace-like offices and are treated with excessive deference, while lower-level employees work in outdated cubicles. This stark contrast can be demoralizing.
(4) As MGM expands into iGaming, its increased focus on online gambling raises concerns about its social impact. While this may not be an issue for everyone, it conflicts with my personal values.
(5) A significant issue is the poor leadership and lack of effective HR support. I encountered ineffective leadership and sought assistance from HR, but received no meaningful support. This lack of intervention exacerbated the leadership challenges I faced and contributed to a frustrating work environment.
(6) Despite MGM’s claims of a family-like culture, job security is lacking. Quiet layoffs are not uncommon. Also, long-term employees can find themselves unexpectedly laid off during corporate restructuring, which undermines the company’s commitment to employee loyalty.
(7) Safety can also be a concern, particularly at certain office locations. I experienced multiple instances of being pursued by vagrants while working at a corporate campus in Las Vegas.
