Low salaries, toxic team environment, biased manager

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Some talented people, but they’re overshadowed by the negative environment. Decent office infrastructure and work-life balance if you're lucky to be in the “favored” group.

      Cons

Low Salary: Compensation is far below market standards, especially given the work expectations. Don’t expect to be rewarded for your hard work or experience. Toxic Management: The management is biased and unprofessional. Promotions and opportunities are not based on merit but on personal favorites of the manager. You’ll constantly feel undervalued unless you're part of their inner circle. Lack of Leadership: The manager lacks basic leadership qualities, often shouting at employees and showing a total disregard for their input or experience. Decisions are made impulsively, with zero transparency or logic. Bad Team Environment: The team dynamic is demoralizing. Rather than collaboration, you’ll find cliques and constant exclusion if you're not in favor. Innovation or good ideas are usually dismissed unless they come from those in the manager’s good graces. False Promises: They dangle fake promises of promotions or better roles, but it’s all lip service. Even when you meet their goals, they’ll find a way to undermine or block your progress.

Great, but some rot creeping in

      Pros

Mostly excellent managers, reasonable opportunities to do new things and I was rewarded with promotions relatively regularly. Pay was always fair.

      Cons

When I joined more than 10 years ago, Mastercard was working hard to improve its culture, specifically from a perceived threat of retaliation by managers. Ajay Banga therefore expertly implemented a culture of decency which helped to address the problem. Since his departure, I witnessed warning signs that some poor culture is getting the room to creep back in and specifically that some managers from newly acquired businesses are exacerbating the issue by failing / not caring to observe the Mastercard Way which ultimately made it a less pleasant place to work.

Culture Shift with Limited Career Growth and Frequent Reorganizations

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Many talented and intelligent employees who are collaborative and willing to help each other succeed. The benefits package is very competitive, and depending on the team, work-life balance can be quite good. The company also provides strong learning opportunities, especially for those interested in growing their skills. There are mentorship programs and development resources available for employees who take initiative in their growth. Employees also have the opportunity to work on complex, high-impact projects that can significantly build experience. Additionally, the company’s brand recognition can be valuable for long-term career development.

      Cons

The culture used to feel very strong and employee-focused, but in recent years it has shifted significantly and feels very different from what it once was. There have been numerous reorganizations, frequent leadership changes, and periodic layoffs, which has created instability and uncertainty across teams. Career growth can feel limited despite strong performance. Promotions sometimes appear influenced more by visibility and relationships than by consistent results, and high performers are often relied on to continue delivering without meaningful progression opportunities. Career advancement can feel slow, with little clarity around what is required to move to the next level. There also appears to be an increasing trend of hiring external candidates into roles where experienced internal employees could have been considered or developed. Compensation is another area that could be improved. Pay does not always feel competitive with the external market, particularly for experienced employees, and better alignment between performance, responsibilities, and compensation would help with retention. With the amount of organizational change, communication gaps have become more noticeable. Teams sometimes operate without clear role definition, and greater transparency around decisions would help build trust. Accountability for workplace behavior can also feel inconsistent at times, which can impact morale. While the company still offers strong brand recognition, good benefits, and opportunities to learn, those looking for long-term stability, competitive compensation, and clear career progression may find the current environment challenging compared to what it once was.

Young, International Consulting Environment with Strong Team but Slow Career Progression

      Associate consultant
      Current employee

      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

The office environment is very young and dynamic. About 1.5 years ago the company moved to a new office, which is modern, beautiful, and well-equipped, located right across from Westend. Most colleagues are great to work with—highly competent professionals who deliver precise and high-quality work. Company events always have a great atmosphere, whether they involve the whole office, the consulting team, or smaller team gatherings. The health insurance is also very comprehensive, covering not only Medicover but most private healthcare providers. Instead of the standard AYCM card, employees receive a Life1 membership, and there are additional opportunities to do sports together with colleagues, such as football and volleyball. The company also supports further education, including funding opportunities for master’s programs or MBAs. Due to the relatively small number of junior consultants across Europe—and the fact that the Hungarian office is one of the locations where they are based—it is also quite likely that employees will have the opportunity to work on international projects early on. At the same time, travel requirements are relatively limited compared to many consulting roles, which can be seen as either a benefit or a drawback depending on personal preferences.

      Cons

One potential downside is that junior consultants are often staffed on multiple projects simultaneously from the very beginning. While this may sound like a good learning opportunity, in practice it can be challenging early on, especially since there is limited influence over whether one is staffed at 100%. At the same time, utilization still plays a role in performance evaluations. Additionally, because there are relatively few junior consultants across Europe and many projects are delivered for international markets, teams are often international rather than Hungarian. As a result, a significant portion of feedback may come from non-Hungarian project managers, which can sometimes feel less directly relevant during semi-annual evaluations compared to feedback from local project teams. The projects themselves tend to be relatively similar in terms of industry focus. This can be either a pro or a con depending on personal interests: for those who enjoy topics related to financial services, cards, fintech, or acquiring, it is unlikely to be an issue. Another potential drawback is that promotion opportunities can be relatively slow. Even after spending two years in a junior role, promotion in the next evaluation cycle is not necessarily guaranteed, even if the required performance score has been achieved. Finally, salary increases tend to be quite modest in percentage terms. While this is largely determined at a global level and not by the local leadership, it can still be frustrating in practice. In most cases, increases are in the single-digit range, typically toward the lower end of that spectrum.
