How are career development opportunities at Riot Games?

      Riot Games reviews

An amazing place to work (for now, anyway)

      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - Incredible perks - Incredible community - Incredible salary - Healthy work culture

      Cons

      - Company just laid off 500 people - Writing & Editing discipline lacks organization, leadership, and direction (although everyone is lovely, highly skilled at their craft, and well-intentioned) - High-level employees are heavily encouraged to become managers because it is the only opportunity for career advancement, not because they're suited for it/passionate about it

      Great people; Disconnected leadership

      Pros

The devs you work with are some of the most talented people you'll come across. They're genuinely passionate about the games and players. For the most part, Riot's done a good job of building a welcoming culture that's come a long way

      Cons

Leadership is completely disconnected from the day-to-day realities. Decisions are made in a vacuum without talking with the people affected by them. A new, contradictory strategy and fresh reorg is invented every 6 months. Career opportunities and collaboration between teams are based on who you know and internal politics

      Pros

      - Exceptional benefits package and compensation - Comfortable work environment with great amenities (kitchen, food, snacks) - Talented colleagues and interesting projects - Generous vacation policy - Truly one of the most comfortable workplaces I've experienced

      Cons

      - The comfort becomes a trap that gradually drains your ambition and energy - Despite working on interesting projects, professional growth feels stagnant - Excessive corporate bureaucracy that slows down meaningful progress - Surprisingly competitive atmosphere with limited genuine connections - Office environment can be extremely noisy and distracting (open floor plan makes concentration difficult) - Disconnect between performance and advancement opportunities - Inconsistent recognition - received praise for being a top performer but no corresponding promotions or raises General advice: Negotiate for hybrid work from the beginning - the office environment can be extremely challenging for focused work. Come for the benefits and salary, but manage your expectations regarding career advancement. If you're highly ambitious and motivated by growth, be prepared for potential frustration with the pace of advancement. This is a place where you can be extremely comfortable but may find yourself years later wondering where your career momentum went. Many employees stay for 7-10 years, which speaks to the comfort level, but raises questions about professional development. The company offers security and stability but may slowly dim your professional spark if you're not careful. Rating: 3/5 - Great for comfort-seekers, challenging for ambitious professionals

Constructive and supportive environment, centered around improvement and growth. Lots of opportunities to speak with other team members, play games outside of work, etc. Very kind and lovely environment to work in.

      Cons

      Pros

Treat employees well. There are good perks and a genuine joy around what we create as a company. Good transparency.

      Cons

Compensation and career opportunities aren't that great. Recent layoff situations seemed to be avoidable and could have been handled better.

      Pros

Ambitious company willing to take bold risks and invest in large ideas. It attracts strong talent from diverse backgrounds, and the people I worked with were generally humble, kind, and highly capable. The on-campus environment is especially supportive for early-career developers or those relocating, offering many opportunities to build community across teams. Benefits are competitive, including strong bonuses, generous matching, mental health support through online therapy, gym or fitness reimbursements, and charitable matching. There are also frequent morale-boosting and social events for those who enjoy a more active campus culture.

      Cons

Limited growth opportunities and a significant gap in communication and transparency between leadership and individual contributors across multiple teams. Earlier in my time there, the culture encouraged psychological safety—asking questions and raising concerns was supported when goals or management styles were unclear. Following financial challenges, that culture noticeably shifted. I observed employees being discouraged or penalized for asking reasonable questions about timelines, and individuals were held responsible for missed deadlines despite approval bottlenecks caused by sudden and excessive micromanagement. Over time, trust eroded across teams and disciplines. I personally experienced an environment that felt unsafe and, at times, discriminatory. Attempts to address these concerns through HR were ineffective, as responses consistently aligned with leadership rather than focusing on rebuilding trust. Feedback from leadership was often delivered privately in ways that felt personal rather than professional. Employees who raised concerns with HR were later laid off, and much of the HR team departed shortly afterward. Overall, the experience was distressing, and based on this, I would not recommend the company as a workplace.

      People are passionate about games

      Business Outlook

      Pros

It's a really fun place to work if you love games

      Cons

Slower career growth and probably less pay than other places for the same work. It's a tradeoff people are willing to pay to work at a place they're passionate about.
