I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at Amazon (Evanston, IL) in Jan 2017
Interview
I applied online and then about three months later I received an online debugging and verbal reasoning assessment. The first round fairly straightforward and I was able to finish the debugging in about half the time allocated and the verbal reasoning also pretty quickly.
The next round was an actual coding challenge that consisted of two questions for 70 minutes which I finished in 33 minutes. If you practice on hacker rank and understand basic data structures you'll be fine.

It started with an OA, and then after a few weeks, I got invited to four rounds of interviews: technical and behavioral at 3 of the 4, and behavioral only at one.

Interview
Online Assessment is the first step in the process. I didn’t have an HR phone screening and went straight to the OA after applying. It was sent to me about a week after I submitted my application.

Unit tests must pass to pass the second question. You can run both backend/frontend indivdually or together
