      Innovation Engineer - Operations Interview

      Oct 3, 2013
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Seattle, WA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA)

      Interview

I had two rounds of phone interviews, first with a recruiter and then with a manger. After this, there was an onsite interview with six different people individually, one HR person and various managers. The recruiter really sold the culture as being innovative and the workforce comprising of pretty much all really smart people. I was excited going into it. I was extremely disappointed after meeting the managers. Maybe this is just an issue with the operations side because most of the people I interviewed with were of extremely average intelligence. I never got a clear explanation on who I was going to be reporting to or how the different groups operated. It didn't seem like most of them really knew what was going on there. Most of the managers were completely inarticulate in describing their own functions. The operations culture seemed to be typical of middle of the road corporate manufacturing companies which means a lot of bullshitters and not a lot of substance to back it up. I am pretty sure that three of the six interviewers didn't even look at my resume beforehand which explains why their questions were limited to things like, "give me an example of when you were challenged." I was really hoping to be intellectually challenged with some tough questioning but it never happened. All the questions were pretty general and not the ones that could bring out any insightful information from a candidate with exception to the ones asked by the one HR representative. This person did ask good questions and followed up with additional questions based on my answers to probe into my personality/background (which is what should happen in an interview) . The other interviews were completely unstructured, another shock considering Amazon claims to be a data driven company and should know there is a very low correlation between results of unstructured interviews and job performance. Two of the six people seemed pretty solid but based on the image that Amazon pushes, I was expecting to be really impressed by all their employees. I have had a pretty successful career with a lot of accomplishments in my short time which is documented on my resume. I was hoping to get questioned on some of this experience since I came there from across the country. I really felt like I had wasted two days away from my real job by meeting with these people. They should at least have the professional courtesy to make sure I am interviewing with competent and prepared interviewers. I believe Amazon really misrepresented themselves. I don't mean to bash them; I just don't see their operations division as having anything over another average technical company. I guess my expectations were too high. Amazon is really known for their customer interface and software side and not their operations so this may not be representative of the entire company. I didn't get an offer but I was planning to raise my asking amount significantly if they had made an offer.

      Question 1

The questions were unexpected and difficult in how poorly they were developed. "Give me an example of when you were challenged" (with no follow up questions based on what I answered).
